i am completely (can't get any more newbie than me!) new to RE and am working on a wise installer. the setup asks for a serial number. i have tracked the setup to loading and unloading a dll in the temp folder when i press 'next' after entering in a dummy serial. I am totally lost. I do have C/C++, Java, VB experience, and I've rear asm and opcode tutorials, but i'm not sure as what to do next.....i know it sounds like i'm begging (please, please), but i have been trying to figure this one out for a long time. I can post the setup, or ISO of the cd i'm using if it will help. thx

Search google with "wise decompiler" without the quotes,
Learn a little more about wise scripts,
Learn to crack serial numbers in simpler programs
Learn to crawl, then to walk, then to jump

i've got all of that. extracted the wise files (*.EWI was the extension) . it looks like they are all encrypted tho. read thru...found where it was asking for %PSERIAL%.....What is a good program (easy) to lean to crack serials?

What have YOU done to try to find the answer to that question? Read the information under your signature.

i'm not exaclty sure what you mean, JMI. i have searched the boards and read the faq (and visited several linked sites).this is the only program i have tried to crack...cause i've only been attempting to crack for a month or so, and this is the one i need. but if i need to learn on smaller progz, i will. i tried to get the serial from one of the serial sites, but the installer needs a different type of number..."Type B or C serial number", so i figured i'd do it myself. I have hunted down information for hours and tried to look at the prog thru a disassembler, and debugging it, and i have learned a few things...but not much. I can program...but not reverse...i am trying to learn asm now...i'm doing all i know how to do. I just thought that someone might have had experience with the wise installer.

Patch the entry point of that dll to an infinite loop, then attach to it when it is loaded, breakpoint all exports, see which ones are called (most likely just one) and check out the return value of it. In most cases you just have to change this return value from 0 to 1 and you're done (then you might of course get trouble with more checks inside the program itself, but what I describe should get you past the installer at least).

Wise setup script internals have been pubished by the same guy who made first wise unpacker.Try to decompile it by hand.It will take time but I guess you can do it.I attach the details of script file.I have added something to original file.

Reversing is an art and a new Order in our way of thinking, you must be a lot more than a programmer, you need to see all around you in reversed order, numbers back to front, people walking like in a bizarre world with all goin in reversed steps, you must think reversed, looking trhough a new window. Its a new world beyond simple mortal data base programmers, a new world where things goes time reversed, following quantum rules, a new world, a new Order.
