hi urgeoverkill,

knoppix of course it has set the standard for live distros and many others base on it. It is known ie for its execellent hardware support, ...
live distros now you will find countless others, and they work perfect, you can access your harddisks and so perfectly try out linux with all your media files and else data, or use them as firewalls, ... some fit on usb sticks, ...
please let me add the comment that this forum should be used for RE topics, and not a discussion about distros

you can visit ptth://www.knoppix.net/ there is a forum as well:
ptth://www.knoppix.net/forum/

Hi, UrgeOverKill,
please do not think I want to be unpolite with you, but... Why are you asking this?
Try it yourself... You will get a clean idea of it, better than any suggestion given by others...

Furthermore, it makes no harm at all to your hard disk, and it is nearly free: you neither need to download it, you find it at your newspaper kiosk!

Best regards, bilbo

Hi,

I have played with this and I think it has potential.
Being able to run from CD, it has many usefull tools
when your OS has been corruped.

Thanks for the replys, it seem intresting to me to rce a target with a *portable* OS. Just thinking of the possibilities.........http://www.woodmann.com/forum/icons/icon10.gif

Apropos live OS-es (CD-only), which can be used as tools collection to repair corrupted OS-es (Woodmann) or as portable platforms for RCE (UrgeOverKill), you could also take into account:

(a) the possibility of building a customizable live CD with Windows OS:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

(b) the possibility of building a full customizable Linux OS:
http://ibuild.livecd.net/ (Debian based) or
http://www.babytux.org/articles/howto/how2livecd.php (Mandrake based)

Best regards, bilbo

EDIT: sorry, 0xf001, maybe this message is completely off-topic; feel free to remove it.

bilbo and all,

its no problem we can leave it here this time
(just to increase the number of posts of course)

for example there exists PHLAK, a cool live CD (ptth://www.phlak.org)
packed and made to be full of hacker tools. there ie is biev as disassembler
included.

and maybe there will soon come a new live CD full of linux RE tools as well hehe

Here's a recent SecurityFocus article on such security related Live CDs, and some more good examples of these are mentioned/linked in it:

thank you for the link dELTA!

I just want to mention PHLAK as I think it could have been included in the article
http://www.phlak.org/modules/news/

what i can see is that most of these "security" live CDs go into more or less one direction (network, direct applications). They are really great and I also use some them to play of course. what makes our CD enough unique is that we target at the reverse code engineering. I was afraid a similar targeted project is allready out - huch

It is cool to have nt password cracker, WIFI scanners, nessus, ... like tools or tools which target an application like IM passwords etc. Somehow these are the "ready made tools" for more or less specific purposes. Not all of course.

So we provide the tools for doing RCE of (armored) binaries and so is targetet more general on the topic, but not giving any full solution so far.

where it really starts rocking is the knowledge database and some related stuff we prepare currently.

so just name it - knoppix|RE is of course "the best"

also that WE have the full control over the CD is cool, so anything helpful you want .........? will not take long. the shrinking process btw is at a major level now and I guess
some Zero's will like it!!
