If it is the demo version, you can report back the bug to them...
IDA was written by C++Builder, so it will have a bug with some video card (Nivida,...). This bug had been reported on Borland site. Icon will be black. Try down the value of "Hardware Acceleration" in Troubleshooting tab of Screen properties.

No problem with Nvidea here, there are some screen color parameters in clsid.cfg and idatui.cfg you might try copying over the files from your working version to the new version and see if that helps.

Hope this infor may help you:

Thank you TQN, I have NVidia TNT 2 and when I decreased hardware acceleration, it worked fine. However, I still have another problem with IDA, when I open a PE file, the code section is never disassembled automatically, i have to keep pressing 'c'.
How can I fix this problem?

Have you checked if the autoanalysis is enabled at startup?
Also, I understand you are using a 4.8 with some strange key from 4.3... Are you sure it is all ok? IDA's developer is well known for punishing illegal users with strange behaviours...
Did you check with another PE files. Take a look at your IDAxxx.cfg files in cfg folder.
Here is my cfg files, and you can use them or merge them with your cfg files.

Thank you for sending your configuration files. I tried your configuration files, but no effect. Some files are analyzed and some are not. Here is what I get:
