Hi,
I'm very new and still learning programming. I have an older target (circa 1997, then new version in 2001) protected by sheriff acudata. I searched the forum for info on this protection and have found a way to get the license key but it does not work because the reference code generated by the software does not match the one needed by the keygen. That is, the reference code I am given is 20 digits while the sheriff keygen needs 24.

example:
old spsapi.dll reference codes (all digits change)
0575-4117-1732-1884-4055
2738-9760-9017-4723-9661

new spsapi.dll reference codes (only last 8 digits change)
2602-0190-8700-5354-7140-7684
2602-0190-8700-5354-7206-7676

I am a bit familiar with softice and some of the other more elementary methods but thats about it. How can I find out about what other protection is being used?

update: its seems the 2001 update gets rid of the sheriff protection and instead substitutes a crippled version. supposedly one is to register the older version via sheriff acudata before installing the update. I am now able to access the program but the calculations the program is supposed to do are crippled. any suggestions on reading up on cripple-ware?
