View Full Version : SoftIce refusing to pop

I am running win98SE and have softice405w9x installed, it did pop a few times when I wanted it to.
It stopped when I prevented the page faults from popping when I did not want it to.

Now I tried ALTKEY ctrl O to change the letter in case some other program was causing conflicts. But that no fix.

I re-installed softice (no fix) and when ever I pop softice I get a beep and nothing else.

I suspect I have incorrect syntax for my winice.dat causing a config error that stops softice doing anything. From what I saw of my winice.dat before I edited it, plus from tutes I have I can't see anything wrong.

Can someone please explain the important aspects of the winice.dat syntax?

Gotta love your "nick" man. Its...um...inspiring.

Maybe you should read the FAQ first so that you can answer your questions yourself.

Let us know what you think the issue is and what you have done to bypass it (enabling page faults again is the first step..duh!) and we will sure help you.

Suggest:

Uninstall Sice AND make sure that winice.dat is wiped out, by manually searching for all instances and deleting them, particularly inside the windows folder
Then reinstall Sice. You should get the default .dat file.

Keep a copy of the original winice.dat and make one change at a time

AND/OR

My original winice.dat is from another version but should work in yours provided THE PROBLEM IS you messing up with the DAT file.

I don't understand you guys. I have been reading the softice docs. This sites FAQ does not mention anything like this problem and the search function comes up with bugger all.

I really don't want to allow faults as win98SE is bug ridden and when softice pops up for those errors its locked up. When I pop it up for my own purposes it runs fine. If you know how to have softice pop up for windows errors and allow me to continue I would allow faults again. I cannot find anything in the softice docs on this problem.

Hi

Not sure I understand why there's a problem. As mentioned the default winice.dat should work OK and yeah you'd normally want faults off which you can specify in the INIT line
INIT="faults off;x;"

You're saying that if you do that then Ctrl-D doesn't pop up Sice?

I trust you have the updated osinfo.dat file in your c:\windows\system32 folder, right?

If not, search google for osinfoxpsp1.rar

To the best of my knowledge osinfo files aren't used on Win98.
