Hi all, thought I'd share a tutorial with you I wrote last night, it's aimed at beginners, it's a crackme program so don't worry, it's legit, I'm against cracking programs that require purchase (unless it's 100% for learning nothing else).

Even though your tutorial is for a crackme type program, the general idea is to demonstrate to people how to find serials in commercial software, so could post is not really "legit" as you put it.

I've given you a gun, it's up to you what you aim it at.
I'm only trying to help people who are new to OllyDbg.

Still however, this is not a cracking board, so posts such as this should not be posted to this board. Only material in the way of Non-cracking related Ollydbg posts should be put here. However, it seems that Ollydbg is only used for cracking programs, and never actually used for debugging your own programs.

Not true, and it would be extremely unfortunate if that general perception were to propagate (that is: OllyDbg = Cr**kingTool, rather than OllyDbg = FirstClassUltraCapableDebuggerWrittenByAFirstClassIndividual).
I have my own opinion(s) regarding software "protection"; generally, that it's a ridiculous waste of time, and programmers would do well to focus on writing better software, instead of better protection, but... that's beside the point. The point is, Oleh has--through the graces of his good nature--given us a tool which halps us to do just that: Write better software. Make his day brighter by letting him know that his efforts have helped you reach that end; not that you're using it to help you defeat someone else's hard work.
Maybe it's a matter of skillz and/or talent - it's a lot easier to break something, than it is to create something great. If that's what you're doing - breaking shit... how 'bout stfu about it, or will you not be fully satisfied 'till you ruin it for everybody...
(note: "you" = whoever the shoe fits)

I agree. I use Ollydbg for reverse engineering, and do RE for fun and learning, not for cracking. If I left every program I had cracked installed on my PC, I would need a PC case just for the harddisks! No, what I do is crack a program, find out how the protection works, and then delete it. After a while I write my own program and use the newly found knowledge in that program (but not necessary for protection purposes - sometimes just because I think it's a better/more efficient way of doing something).

Sorry for posting this here, this tutorial was not meant to help you crack programs you have to pay for, I have never cracked a program that needed purchase and used it, only cracked a program for knowledge, then reverted to the uncracked version (and that is the truth I'm a software developer myself) I was just looking for tutorials for OllyDbg and could only find a handful and thought I would try and help spread the word of OllyDbg and help new users to it. Plus it is telling you how to crack a crackme not a specific application/game/os (windows has a hardcoded serial), but I can see how it could be misused. Where do you think this tutorial would be most suited, is there a board or site somewhere, or even a forum, I would hate for the tutorial to be wasted.
