Firstly, please keep this thread constructive and polite. Everyone reading this thread is no doubt a big fan of both these forums and the magnificent OllyDbg debugger (all hail!), so lets work together to ensure they both remain available for all of us to enjoy.

My query is just in regards to "crackmes". Regardless of which country you live in, it isn't illegal to post or host crackmes or solutions to crackmes, so I'm just wondering what your thoughts are about these? We absolutely _DONT_ want this forum becoming a "how do I crack this" forum, but at the same time, crackmes offer a unique way of learning about various protection schemes, and in the case of analysis (virus analysis, etc), such protections must be overcome before the real code can be analysed so crackmes can offer a unique shortcut into learning these protections.

In other words, there are reasons both FOR and AGAINST being able to post crackmes and crackme solutions here. I was just hoping for a _CONSTRUCTIVE_, mature, and polite discussion about why they should, or shouldn't be, allowed here.

Thankyou to everyone who posts their thoughts, and peace to everyone else.

I'm all for crackmes for the reasons you mentioned above. Helps software makers find the flaws in their security.

Talking of crackmes on this forum isn't probably harmful. Although one may argue on what really lies behind playing with crackmes I believe crackmes are often very intelligently designed small pieces of code that do surprising things. But I do agree with TBD that this must not become a cracking forum.

reasons both FOR and AGAINST being able to post crackmes and crackme solutions here

against
- a simple google search for "how to crack with OllyDbg" will return the forum and in 99% cases they will post a crack related question without reading the rules of the forum
- as the one who host the forum requested that no cracking related posts should be allowed I want to respect that because I like it here. and also my intention was not to create a cracking forum - only a OD users forum

for
- there are some nice crackmes that involve nice tricks with x86 opcodes and SEH that are a good test for OD. so, some snippets of code from this one are allowed for testing

For

The 99,99 users of OLLYDBG are crackers and the reports of BUGS of different versions of OLLY was made 99,99 % made by crackers, and the 0.01 % are one programmer and this are very busy with your own program for write for the bugs.

Ricardo Narvaja: it does not matter what people are doing with OllyDbg. If they use it for cracks and they discover bugs or missing features they can always report it on this board.

The point of TBD is basically that if they have problem on "how to crack...", they can discuss it somewhere else. Not here!

If this board will be closed because of cracking related discussions, we will all (crackers and not) miss a place where we have the opportunity to drive the improvements to OllyDbg.

Personally, I'm not against crackmes but I perfectly agree with TBD on not allowing them because of the reasons he wrote.

Well i accept the rules of the forum, but i`m only putting a opinion, for me OLLYDBG is used for crackers, and this are the users and the beta testers , if i cannot talk about cracks crackmes, etc very well iaccept this, but is only my opinion or is prohibited too.

perhaps you could link a forum on which is discussed how to resolve crackmes ? (crackmes only)
there would be a seperation of the q's here!
