Bush to push immigration bill at Capitol

President Bush, is meeting with the members on Capital Hill, seeking to change enough minds among GOP senators to salvage a top domestic priority. The measure, which legalizes up to 12 to 20 million unlawful immigrants stalled last week in the face of broad Republican opposition.

Sen Sessions Says We Will Back An Amended Bill

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., says that Bush "needs to help us write a better bill and not push a bill that so many of us cannot support. We are real close, this will be good for America."

Bush Is At Confidence Level Five

Schumer's Democrats have written Bush saying it is up to him to lean on Republicans to back the measure. Bush predicted Monday that he will wrangle those republicans into signing that bill. "I'll see you at the bill signing," he promised Schumer.

Harry Reid Is Praying

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he will bring up the measure again if Democrats can be assured of more Republican backing. It's up to Bush to line up the republicans.

Sen Kyl From Arizona

Said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a key sponsor of the bill: "I think the president understands that really is our last best hope. We have a system that cannot identify whether they (immigrants) are legally employed or not."

Mitch McConnel Is For The Bill

Mitch is working the republicans to see what minor changes they will need to pass the bill. Proponents of the bill gathered Monday evening to plot strategy for bringing it back. Sen. Mitch McConnel, R-Ky., the minority leader, has said such a deal could allow the bill to go forward.

The bill allows 20 million immigrants in as citizens, and 600,000 a year as guest workers.

Trent Lott Gives It His Backing

Sen. Trent Lott called it "democracy working at its best". Lott said. "I hope that the majority leader will work with us to move it forward."
