Alpha Architecture Documentation

First developed by Digital after they decided not to use MIPS CPU's anymore. As Digital was bought by Compaq later, the Alpha architecture was maintained by Compaq from thereon. Nowadays Alpha Processors are mainly used in high performant server and workstation systems, running either Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS or Linux. The development of the Alpha architecture has been stopped only recently in favor to the development of the IA64 architecture by Intel.
