View Full Version : Deleting Inactive Users

Since UBB stores all user data in text files, rather than in a real database, eventually we're going to hit a point where there are so many users on this system that the system will start to break in strange and unusual ways.
To avoid this problem, as of today anyone who registers as a new user and then posts no messages for 90 days will have their account deleted.
Lots of folks sign up and then never post messages. Since the only reason you need an account is so that you can post messages, there's no reason to waste disk space on these inactive accounts. If you ever post just one message, your account is safe.
Thank you. I always wanted this name but it was taken and the jackass who took this name never posted again. I guess I am back for now. I like what you have done with the place enigma.
One more thing...You don't have to answer. But how did you manage to get "Posts: 10142" I guess with you're admin abilitys you tacked on 10,000 posts. Because I would be sad if I weren't here to see you post so much.

How did you get soo many posts Jeff?

Oh well, I'm glad you finally realized you needed to do that.

Once you hit 10,000 posts you have reached spiritual enlightenment "Nirvana" And that is where jeff is from http://www.totse.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif)
Actually he can saywhat ever he wants, as admin he can give himself 10k posts.
As for the deleting inactive users... I'm undecided. 3 months is pretty resonable time to post at least 1 messege. I know there are a few people here who would have lost their name by now, but they will just have to register again. It seems like a good idea in general.
If you know that you are going to be out of the system for an extended period, is there any way your screen name can be preserved?

yay this means my old name that i dont want anymore will get deleted... i was hoping there had been a way to delete an account before, but if there was i didn't know it...
i think its a good idea

Yeah, maybe a checkbox to toggle if you are going to be away, and it auto preserves your account.
Oh, and for you non-10,000 posts people, to change your post count all you have to do is send me some money, $100+ and I will get your post count up for you.

Either some of you misunderstand, or i misunderstand. This is how i see it:
quote:as of today anyone who registers as a new user and then posts no messages for 90 days will have their account deleted.
This leads me to believe that it will only apply to new users. Also:
quote:If you ever post just one message, your account is safe.
Now, that makes me think that as long as you post once your name will be safe until the next time Enigma wants to clear the system, and that the account deletion can only happen after the first 90 days after regestering (and not after a whole year, Nox).

Shite, is my account alive?

I have over 10,000 posts because I've been posting on totse since 1989, but I'd never bothered to add my total posts from the old BBS software to my post count on UBB. UBB has only been around since 2000.
Chunkmiester: If I deleted EVERYONE with zero posts then someone who just registered today would get deleted because they haven't had a chance to post yet. New users get 90 days to post a message. After 90 days with no posts, then an account gets deleted. One post in 90 days and the account lives forever.
Or at least until I add "account aging" as a feature of the software. When I was running RA BBS, I deleted anyone who hadn't logged on for 90 days, because RA BBS tracked the user's last login date. UBB doesn't track that currently, but it could be altered to do so.

ah, so... my old account doesn't get deleted... ah well...
I like the idea of an aging software as well though

This Jeff character scares me, it's almost like he killed enigma, took all his posts from old, then stole his admin rights. A conspiracy, I tell you. He speaks of old billboards, aging software and UBB. Could he possible be more powerfull than Enigma? What about J.C Stanton?

He is enigma, I don't know why for the life of me why he is using his real name on this BBS...

Maybe its NOT his real name.

maybe he's from a different web site on Nirvana network, and all the post from that site come here also.

You call me a liar and claim that you're "not capping" on me? Well, what can I say? How about this: You have a poor understanding of how this system works and an equally poor grasp of the English language.
Do a search on your own posts and you won't find 193 of them. The system deletes old posts after 30-90 days of inactivity, depending on the forum. Posts in Spurious get deleted after 15 days of inactivity, and there are still over 10000 of them.
I started posting in 1989, and used to post a hundred messages a week or so. Then I got a real job.

Dude, if you look up some of the old &TOTSE textfiles, you'll find that "Jeff Hunter" is listed as admin of &TOTSE.
peace out.

Well, no shit, Sherlock.
Before he changed his handle to "Jeff Hunter", he was enigma/root/other. During that period, a search of &TOTSE would bring up "Jeff Hunter" as admin of the earlier BBS. Most people were probably unaware of this, before the switch in handle.
peace out.

i want 10,000 posts
What's so important about 10,000 posts? Why do people care so much about their post count?
Sure, 10,000 posts is a shit load of posts, but if you're here long enough..and know what you are talking about, you can get that many posts...
