I recently re-enabled the [ img ] tags in UBB in all forums, mostly just to see what people would do with them.

Keep in mind, posting pictures wider than about 400 pixels really messes up the screens for folks and makes the site look like crap.

Posting images that are large (byte-wise) slows page load times down to a crawl for people with dial-up connections.

Posting pictures of disgusting things that have nothing to do with the topic at hand is annoying. We've all seen extruded anuses, wounds full of maggots, and German porn with people eating each other's excrement. Big whoop. Isn't that exciting. <YAWN> You can just as easily put in a link to the image and a description of what the link points to, so if someone really wants to see a woman licking a dog's ass they can click the link and see it, or skip the link if they don't care to see what you're pointing to.

If people ignore these guidelines I'll just turn the image tags off again. I don't think they add a whole lot to the message area, but sometimes they're excellent at getting a point across. So if you've got a picture that you want to share, exercise some common sense before sticking it in an image tag.

Thank you for bringing them back. I have yet to use them (in a serious manner) but I think they will be very handy.

Thanks for re-enabling those tags. I will probably find them useful.

People (at least in BB) have seemed to use the img tags responsibly and helpfully, so leave them on please.

Edit: 1337images etc are changed to links now, on topic images are fine.

For whatever it's worth, which ain't much, it would be fine with me if those pics went away and stayed away.

Most of the ones I've seen were not worth shit, much less a thousand words.

Of all the pictures on the internet to post, you chose that one. Why?

David, As much as I know you are trying to be helpful its better off not straight feeding it to them. If they are smart enough to actually read the FAQ and about sections and find the page about img tags then they are most likely smart enough to use them properly. When you just give out the simplest information you get the kids coming in here and ruining it for all of us. A perfect example would be geocities,You know how many kids start up kewl pages with geocities, But it is rare to see a kewl page with actual hosting(Bombshit included).

Sarcasm is really hard to distinguise from on the internet...Just remember that the [i] tag is there for use...and then there is always [sarcasm]

Your local Green Lantern is here to help! (as long is the image isn't yellow, I don't do yellow.)

If you see an image you like, right click it and go down to properties. You will see something called "Image URL" or "Adress" or something like that and it will have some text starting with "http" and usually ending with "jpeg". Copy and paste that text here. and remember, for all your future queries...

It has finally become a reality...(for now).

We should keep image tags enabled but make it so an image is automatically changed into a link when in a quote.

After actually looking at the images people post here, I'm supporting removing the tags. I've been changing 1337images and the like to links in BB, and I'm supported in this effort by the other 3 mods of that forum.

Those could've been links just as easily, and had the same effect.

Not to turn this into a thing about signatures, but they might be a good idea. Instead of using the "From:" part of the info, people could post a signature.

The img tag has been misused lately by spurious gen. (pumkins, etc.), and the whole timothy thomas episode, and other people. When we change to new software you should have an admin option to disable image tags for certain users.

neon

First a question: Why did you have that gawd-awful blue message board in the beginning?

And as anybody can rightfully tell you, signatures suck major dick. And i say leave the image tags in. Just because some of the mindless dorks here can't imagine a proper use for them, does not mean that they should be eliminated.

It would be greatly appreciated if the image tags were to be disabled, for people such as Abraham Gorilla seem to enjoy posting the picture of goatse.cx and other users cannot seem to find any purpose for images other than to irritate others. The image tags not being used properly, and therefore should be disabled.

You could always just thretten to ban people who post porn and change the cgi script to not post pic's bigger than 600 pixels.

Daithai
2003-08-25, 11:38
Or you could set the software to not allow people to post pics bigger than 600 pixles.

As is utilised at overgrow.com I think a good idea is too keep the images in posts small but have them link to the full size image.

Ever since the size of pictures was limited through the software all the smilies I use from http://www.mysmilies.com/ are enlarged does that have to do with the limiting size of pictures or is it just a coincidence? http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/edoom/Thinkingof_.gif" width="90" height="90 (http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/edoom/Thinkingof_.gif" width="90" height="90)

Rat_Bastard

Same here! all images are streached to 90X90 even if they are smaller:

<A HREF="http://www.totse.com/bbs/icons/icon6.gif">http://www.totse.com/bbs/icons/icon6.gif" width="90" height="90 (http://www.totse.com/bbs/icons/icon6.gif" width="90" height="90)</A>

15X15

<A HREF="http://krimzonpyro.com/rat/boardimage/hammer.gif">http://krimzonpyro.com/rat/boardimage/hammer.gif" width="90" height="90 (http://krimzonpyro.com/rat/boardimage/hammer.gif" width="90" height="90)</A>

56X82

I mean, Im all for keeping the board width's in check, but:

A: images are getting warped as shown above.

B: I think 90X90 is a bit extreme. I can only find smileys and tiny avatars are the only things I can find in that category. and you can easily fit say, a 200X200 pixel image without changing the entire board.
