If you don't, I am sure you can find many similar pictures of men holding their anuses open all over google. The reason for this is not because we don't want to see it, anybody can just ignore it, but there lies a heavier problem than that. As stated in the Totse FAQ's:

D0nnar, even you must agree that all places much have some censorship and rules. Otherwise they just become a mess, like it has recently. Totse has pretty relaxed rules and the banning of one word shouldn't be a problem. It will improve the communty by stopping idiots who think that goatse is the funniest and most origanal thing since sliced bread posting links to it. And that can only be a good thing.

I suppose you're right in that the banning of one word is not a sign of nazism [actually it was two sites]. Pesonally, I was happy to see timothy thomas' dead babies leave, but I didn't really notice an unusual increase in stupidity before these changes, starting with the removal of post count and location, began. I just saw it as another wave like all those before that seemed to be self-correcting.

I get nervous at any sign of censorship, though, especially in a place that proudly displays the First Amendment on it's home page. In the end, it's not my job or my business and the admins will do whatever they like.

I'm still pleased that I can post these opinions here. Hell, I even like the "shuttup" response. I've used it myself. And I'm still here, and totse is still a unique creature.

I totally agree. I don't think that we should have to apply a ban to the site at all. If people did not post it so much, I would not be doing it. But when people go from thread to thread posting it randomly, it eats up a lot of our time. Spurious gets about 3 pages of new posts per day, most of those posts are multi-page posts. It can be *very* time consuming to go from one to the other just to make sure that a picture is not being posted.

Yes, we could just let it stay, who cares. Well, to tell the truth, if I were reading a thread, and a giant asshole was in the middle of it for no appearent reason, I would stop reading. Or if I had made a great post which was doing quite well and some jackass decided to post the picture a few times because he was bored, I would be mad.

If the site had other content I can assure you that it would not be banned.

The point is not to stop everybody. The point is to discourage people and to let them know that totse does not stand for spamming and such things. You can never stop them all, but if they are determined enough to upload the picture to a webserver and post it, there probably isn't much that will stop them.

We've been admins for at least a year now I believe.

That's hardly 'new'. And we've both been members and moderators for multiple years. We are the *last* people who would go against the spirit of the site.. but in some respects we have to go with the greater good of the greater number. It's just not physically possible for us to edit out pictures from every single forum.

It takes six clicks just to edit one post, plus three page loads, plus the typing to remove the offending text. Plus the time taken to open each thread and read each post/scan image/check url.

At 3 pages of topics posted in spurious per day, you're looking at an unreasonable amount of time.

I think they should be changed to goat se and out war. That way you can still tell what someone is talking about, but links wouldn't work. Then you wouldn't be censoring the free speach of anyone. But also look at this (https://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum25/HTML/000968.html) thread, in which Prometheus tried to say out ward (without the space) and it got changed to ******d. Now, any of us would know what happened, and even if you didn't you could probably guess from context. But if more totally usless sites are added to the ban (which I think they should be) then the little mistakes would happen more often, and you would have a harder time guessing the censored word if you were new.

Is there any chance of enabling the superscript and subscript UBB commands on the BBS, because i spend a lot of time on Mad Scientists and it's a pain in the arse to keep having to type ^n (n being a number) every time i want to insert a power. It's not so much a pain in the arse (because typing [sub] etc. every time would be) but it looks awful and at first glance looks confusing. Any chance or am i just speaking on my own?

As of October 12th, the word commonly refered to as "The N Word" has been banned. I did not ban the word, but I support the decision.

It has been banned because of its over use. It's just the same as posting a web url which contains malicious code: It has no purpose except to make people mad.

If you're asking yourself why "cracker" or "whity" has not been banned, it's because nobody has used those words in a malicious way. If your only goal is to piss people off, then you're what we call a spammer or troll, both of which are not tolerated here.

I usually keep my mouth shut about the decidedly arbitrary nature of board policy, but have you considered how totally lame it is to ban a word instead of banning the idiots that use it?

I realize that's it's far easier to write a sript forbidding the use of {n|+any vowel|+gg|+er} than it is to have to keep banning idiots that spam the forums with n-word topics, then reregister and do it again under a new user name, but it smacks of republicanesque reactionism to actually abridge the board lexicon instead of prunning the users.

The absurdity of it occurred to be when I made a post in 'spurious' containing the name Arnold Schwartze******. It was censored. Same thing happens if you spell it with an 'e', though I haven't tried 'u', 'i', 'o' or 'y' yet, nor do I intend to. Admittedly, the loss of the use of a mediocre governors name is a small price to pay for political correctness, but it seems diametrically opposed to totse's usual egalitarian, populist and libertarian tone to censor an idiotic word but to keep the idiots that used it.

Following this type of chain of 'logic' is the reason politicians believe banning porn will stop teenaged pregnancies, banning guns will stop violent predatory crime and banning needles will stop opiate addiction.

Totse is supposed to be smarter than that.

Banning someone is far more libertarian than banning a word, plus it makes for a cleaner 'gene-pool' for lack of a better tem.

If you ban the word and keep the idiots that were using it, it doesn't change a damn thing, except for the aesthetics of the forums. It's far more educational to ban someone for fucking up than to forbid them to use certain distasteful language. The board seemed - brighter - before the current AOLish emphasis on acting 'in loco parentis'.



Anyway, what's done is done, and no doubt will stay that way, I just wanted to point out that the most expediant course of action isn't always neccessarily the best course of action.

That said, while I greatly disaprove of racist and hateful language, in no way do I support the N-word being banned. I do wholeheartedly agree with banning g-o-a-t-s-e and o-u-t-w-a-r. Those served no purpose other than to be annoying. On the rare occasion that they come up in legitimate conversation, something like what I did can substitute well enough.

That said, I would like to implore of the administrators that when they ban a word the ban is restricted to it as a whole word. It took me a while to figure out why outward war appearing as ******d after the one word was blocked.

Zok, can you cook up a script that will disallow the excessive repetition of the same word (character set) over and over and over? Say, the word 'badger' for instance?



It seems like there would rarely be any instances that a single letter or word would need to be repeated more than three or four times to get one's point across in a post.

So it's a pretty safe bet that if someone is doing so, then they're just some kidiot on a spam spree.

The words and images aren't the problem, the problem has to do with the fact that totse has been overwhelmed by idiots. Why? Look at some of the content totse has: stuff on drugs, blowing stuff up, hacking, etc. In short, information on counter-culture any attention deprived kid would want.

Granted, one can be a hacker, pyro, etc, and be mature and professional about it. To the best of my knowledge, totse was founded by the likes of these. However, totse's open membership policy (which I fully support, reversing it would contractict the philosophy that totse was founded upon) has inevitably resulted in a flood of attention deprived kids who, as far as I can tell, have destroyed the totse of old. I've only been here for a couple years, but I can remember when most of the threads were interesting. Flaming was rare. Responses were informative.

It's only going to get worse, probably at an exponential rate. The idiots not only ruin totse, but they encourage each other. Banning words and images isn't going to fix it, it will only set a dangerous precedent that undermines the ideals that totse was founded upon.

The solution? If I were Zok, what I would do is purge totse of the idiots. Zok cannot do it alone, it would take a ton of manpower. If I were Zok, I would create a position called "assistant moderator." Assistant mods could could mark offensive/stupid threads (hopefully quickly, if I were in charge I'd have an ass. mod on SG 24/7), which would temporarily disappear until a real mod could review them. I would guess that this would take a lot of the tedious work out of modding.

Of course, the post isn't the problem, it is the poster. Totse could adopt a three strike policy, if you do stupid stuff three times, you're IP banned (or maybe suspended, but that is more work). That's the way I'd handle it, it might not work, but neither will word/image bans.

Totse doesn't attract morons to the more informative spots like DIY, T&T, NSaH, Mad Scientists and the others, well it does but they only last a day or two. The problem is Spurious. It serves almost no purpose. rarely is a topic of any importance or interest discussed. I think that shutting down Spurious would be an excellent way of fixing the problem, because that is where all of the problems originate.

I think that there should also be a few new moderators, because Totse is spreading the moderators entirely too thin. Some moderators are in charge of multiple forums.

I also think that there needs to be some banning going on. If you make an example of a few people it might discourage future spammers and trolls, or what ever there called now.

It might also help if the flood control time was increased. I noticed some people who have like 70 posts and this is their first day, then others have been here 2 months and have 2700 posts. Thats 45 posts a day. I think that is way too much. And I Guarentee that at least half are just crap.

You are wrong, or only slightly right. Totse is an INFORMATION site. It is not for idiot spammers to post stupid image tags or for people to copy and paste the word badger 400 times. I agree that totse should be free speech, but some of you just aren't responsible enough. You may not be the one posting this crap, but you encourage it with your little comments.

Would it be possible to bring back the img tags in some of the other forums like DIY? They are really useful for explaing things and showing some of the pictures of projects.

Anyway, I was wondering if there would also be a way to limit the size of a word that you can post to something like 15 letters. This would help with them morons that post a topic with a 100 W's to cause a page to stretch.

Everyone, even contributing members, make mistakes. These people are not the problem. The idiots who repeatedly break the rules are the problem. Only these idiots should be banned. I was thinking of this today, and I realized what we need are a couple people who are technically admins but with whom there is an understanding that all they will do is get rid of spam, spammers, and ways to spam. I think panthrax would be a good candidate, since he's on here all the time. And I imagine Gustave and mizled would be happy to have a way to get rid of this insanity.
