I opened registrations again. This is one of the last changes we wanted to make for the board. Please don't register more than one account. When people create backups or stock up on accounts, it uses up space in our database. Since our DB is a flatfile, it will corrupt when it gets too big. Since only Jeff has access to fix the member db, totse will be down for however long it takes him to get to it when this happens.

We aren't going to ban anyone unless there's a damn good reason, so don't give us one. If there are any problems, we will close registrations again.

I've been waiting a month to start a new username because I didn't know the password to this one, and the email address was wrong. Just yesterday I beat the systom and figured out a way around it.

Same here, my account under the screen name Morb got eaten too (Frank of the Dead is letting me use this old account for now). Is there anything that can be done to restore accounts of people who just had theirs disappear?

So ubb fucked up again. There is a large amount of unregistered users. I'm not exactly sure what happened but I closed registrations again in order to fix it. As you can tell, UBB randomly changed my name to zokk and sent me a new password for my "new" account in my email. I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

I think the creators of this version of UBB threw all these weird things in here just to fuck with us.

I think that totse's software probably isn't even "high-tech" enough for that... I doubt the admins wouldn't have done it allready if it was an option...

How did somebody who has this type of attitude ever become an admin? I understand that this type of "abuse" may piss you off, but think of the consequences.

If you shut it off again, that means you have to turn it back on. When you do, you get abuse again! The only way the surge will stop is if registrations were left ON, and time would allow it to subside. Then you clean it up.

It is obvious that you do do not care about the best interests of the community, much less the wishes of Jeff. Before you consider making a change, be sure to ask yourself... "What would Jeff do?".

Like it or not, Jeff is in charge. If you piss him off, he can "/sbin/halt".



ADMINS: I would encourage you investigate the origin of the promotion of this user to Admin. My gut says another admin (friend) promoted him without following procedure.

AHH! A double post! But it's a way different topic, so I thought it was worth it....

Can we lock "n00bs" into a small set of forums? Then, when posts reach x (10? 25?), they go into a bin of "pending moderator approval", whereas they can still post in the n00b forums.

From there, by vote (IE: 1 admin having a radical opinion will not ruin it for the poor little bastard) admins/mods/etc. can approve the PLB for access to the full range of forums. If a large amount of these posts are flames/etc., he is banned and his posts deleted (henceforth conserving database space).

For the purposes of the above, "Poor little bastard" and PLB are surely registered trademarks of some asshole, and I'll probably get sued in the morning...

Oh yeah... if this sounds like a good idea, I'd be willing to develop policies for such (IE: selection policies).

NEXT: The separation of the forums for performance.

With the recent upgrade of the servers, I would expect that new forums would begin to be reconsidered again. However, this may be a good deal away, and the current databases will only continue to destabilize as they increase. For this, I see 2 things as helping:

ONE: Routine purging... I have no idea what current policies of purge criteria are. But, the cutting of unused accounts, audit and removal of rarely used features, archiving and removal of posts of X age, etc. The smaller the DB, the more efficient it is.

TWO: Separate user databases for the separate forums... How many people post in more than a couple forums? If separate instances of UBB, or a customized version existed, I would think you could have several, much smaller, user databases. Each user would have to register for each forum.

THREE: SQL-to-flatfile scripts

I would think that a small script could act as a way to immitate the current databases enough to make the software better. It may not be terribly efficient, but the backend databases would be much much much more stable. I would be willing to host a "sandbox" for this, just something to mess with freely. But, I'm sure that I could have something scratched out in a few hours.

When it comes to the database conversion (IE: FF to SQL), and the implementation of new forums, please take advantage of my help. I just went through a massive conversion of a commercial software (It took 4 days for the combined resources of 2 multi-million dollar sites to convert the databases from one system to another). Yeah, they were huge databases! But I would love to (and even beg to) assist in at least this one project.

Where is the admin and his local buddies located? MSA would be close enough... I'm just curious if my current means would be sufficient to temporarily relocate myself to your location to assist in any projects you have.

uh, if you actually knew anything about totse, and were qualified to judge, you'd know that (a) I'm female.

(b) Zok and I were admined at the same time.

(c) Jeff was the one that made the decision to admin us, along with JC.

(d) I was the only one actually trying to control registration so it could be opened. I tried everything from a ban amnesty - allowing banned users to have their accounts back if they promised to behave, just so that they wouldn't NEED to have backup accounts, to sitting and moderating EVERY SINGLE registration request. That's 600+ of them in a single day. I have always done my best to be a fair and honest admin, and to keep this site running to the best of my abilities, the considerable number of which are the reason I became an admin in the first place.

I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself, until you can be bothered to make them informed ones.
