View Full Version : Registration has been disabled until mail is working again

Jeff Hunter

Registration has been disabled until I finish configuring the mail server. Without the mail server UBB can't mail out passwords so it doesn't make much sense to enable registrations without the mail server.

So, Jeff, one thing I notice whenever you get called back here, with the exception of right now, you open up registration and cut flood control, yet as soon as you fade the other admins bring it back. I know this is an absentee dictatorship and all, but dont you feel all this rivalry between admins/mods and regulars is ruining the site you devote so much of your time and money to? Also, maybe im losing it, but wasnt there something in the FAQ before about the reason TOTSE was started was to go against the old school days when "rich guys with expensive IBMS" were the only guys selectively allowed to join BBS after filling out forms and stuff? You wanted a site to be free for every one, was that ever really in the FAQ or this another one of the cases where I think I read something http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif)

In all honesty, the other admins were doing their best to keep the system running when the system was being flakey and I was AWOL.

There was a theory floating around that stopping new registrations, reducing the page size, or increasing the flood control time would make the system more stable -- and there is a bit of truth to that -- but the real problems were due to the fact that totse was running on an old server running an older version of Linux and Apache wasn't as optimized as it could be.

The outage forced me to deal with the root problem -- the outdated version of Linux. I have eliminated most of the instability problems (I think). There's still a problem with the mail system that can cause crashes so I'm working through the configuration step-by-step and that's taking a while.

To answer your real question, I noticed the same thing, so I modified the UBB control panel so that those sorts of changes are now disabled, except by me. I told the other admins that if they wanted to turn off registrations or modify the other settings they's have to ask me, and my answer may be no.

Have you considered either a virtualized server (IE: VmWare or the like) or a separate physical server to run the mail server? I'm sure the last thing anybody (including you) would want a MTA crash to bring down the box (even if only temporary).

Whoa Jeff, leave them with the ability to turn of registration.

Its critical for spam attacks. Shit I was there when there was a couple hundred blank threads in Spurious and only Kate was there. So I helped her out until Suzie or AM came and took care of it, but they made a whole bunch of new screen names.

Yea so leave turning on and off registration availible. Unless you know what your doing...

The admins are running this site Jeff, and their decisions and changes have never, in the long run, led totse to any harm. Although, as I must admit it seems, you have fixed your crap server for the meantime, I still think the old methods of control would be useful.

Also can you fix the damned long URL glitch, 'cus that is pissing everyone off, thanks.

I don't know what mail server you are using, but try Mercury anyway. It's free and very customizable. I tried it once and had my own mail server on the computer. Didn't even need the ISP for sending mail.

You've been here a few months, you don't know shit about totse nor its history. I think nearly every member would agree that totse used to be better than it is now. However, totse is still degrading, and there is no end in site. As the admins are running the site, they are at least, in part, responsible for the continued demise of totse. Since this is the case, why the hell would Jeff want to give them more power? I can understand his POV.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what the admins do, and I am sure they use their best judgment and try their hardest to keep the site together. But, frankly, it hasn't produced results.

I understand that the administrators and moderators claim they need better software to administer the site. However, there has been talk of new forum software for years now. It is obvious that nothing is going to be written unless someone steps up and takes charge of the project (if it is PHP driven, it will probably require the purchase of a new server, too). Again, I am a professional PHP/MySQL developer, and I'd be more than willing to contribute some time to such a project.

Really, the last thing totse needs is yet another feud. With totse in its current state, the administrators and Jeff have better things to be doing than to be bitching at each other.

Although I certainly agree with your opinion in the most part jsax, I believe that it needs to be taken a step farther.

Totse needs a top-down revamping of it's admin/moderator situation.

Power-hungry admins like acidmelt need to be either repremanded or simply removed. Innefective or overeffective moderators like lostcause and valmont need to be demodded and replaced with qualified persons.

My God is slowly degenerating into a large, institutionalized flame war. Spurious' emphasis on discussion, and overmoderation in this arena has taken away the fun atmosphere. Politics is a ghost town. I'm sure similar situations are being seen in other forums.

Whether caused by moderation or other factors, totse has become more and more ideologically homogeneous. I'm sure this isn't what you had envisioned this BBS as being.

Something has to be done. Many of us who've been here for a while have been complaining about this for years, but we have no power to do anything about it, and those who might won't.

Jeff, I would have emailed this to you but the obvious is preventing me.

Are you going to bring back up the SSL server? I found it highly useful for performing moderator duties over insecure connections. I'm sure a few others would like to see it brough back as well.

By the way, good work on getting the server setup again. I'm sure I'm not the only one that will appreciate the increased responsiveness and uptime.

I didn't want registration to be turned off, but when there is literally a choice between spammers everywhere that we cannot control because of ineffective (ie useless) ban abilities, or turning off registration, which would you rather have?

In many cases, when registration was turned on, idiots simply made a new account as each one was deleted, and then made as many posts as possible in order to screw the system for the rest of you. In an ideal world, of course registration would be turned on, but this is not an ideal world.

If we did NOT deal with the spammers, you would all hate us more. Instead of aiming your hatred at the people abuse the system, those of us doing our best to keep order with no tools to do so are the ones criticised.

Yes, people who are not at fault lose out because of those who are. That's out of our control.

I'm glad to see that jeff is finally updating the software around here. Maybe then we WILL have tools to keep this place running without having to resort to extreme measures.

Attention: Jeff

Posting for panthrax:

quote:

Jeff, it's panthrax - A co-moderater of BLTC as I'm sure you're

fully aware of. But anyway, I have recently changed my e-mail

address in my &TOTSE User Profile and expected to recieve a

verification/new password email sent to my newly added profile.

Well, it didn'.t

It has been several days now, and still no word or mention of

anything about it (I emailed the rest of the administrators and

told them as well, as asked them to let you become aware of it

somehow).

I tried e-mailing you and J.C. Stanton about it but unfortunately,

you both check email you recieve on a "@totse.com" email address

and the email system was and is down.

So I can't recieve my new login password that is created when you

change the username in your profile until the mail system is fixed.

Assuming it might take awhile (as shown so far) to get the email

back up and running, I wanted to ask you Jeff if you could just

checkout what the system automatically set as my password and send

it to panthrax@hush.com so I can login finally and resume co-

moderating BLTC.

There have been many-a-night where I was on BLTC late at night,

reading threads that deserved to be closed. There were no other

moderators on at that hour so it sucked to know I COULD do

something about it if only I was logged in, but I wasn't.

I am an administrator myself on 3 different message boards that

aren't widely-popular except for Pharmaecopia so I know what you

can do as an Administrator.

Couldn't you look up in the Administration Control Panel, go to

some kind of "User Management" section, search for my username,

"panthrax" and copy/paste the given password into an email to send

to my new email address?

I would really appreciate it if you could at least send me my new

password if getting the mail server back up is going to take

awhile. That way, I still still post at &TOTSE.

Just thought I'd have Social Junker post it for me so you'd know

what is going on. Thanks, Social! http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

While I have the chance, how long will it be until you have the

mail system back up and running and what distro of linux are you

using now, and what were you using (just curiosity, I like linux).

Also, since I couldn't contact you because of your e-mail address

(@totse.com), if you could email me an alternate email address or

an instant messenger addy (I have them all), that'd be awesome

since we staff members have no other way to reach you besides

relying on &TOTSE's mail servers to function correctly all the

time. We kind need a backup if you have one. http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif) But anyway, thanks
