View Full Version : HTTPS is back on-line

After much hair-pulling, HTTPS is back on-line. I've set up HTTPS many, many times before, and it's not that hard, but I was trying to use the built-in configurator tools that come with SuSE, and they don't quite do what I want them to.

So I finally decided screw 'em, I'll use vi.

I'm still working on:

* Mail server setup.

* Search engine setup.

* Submission page Perl libraries. (Some of the libraries I was using have been updated out of existence.)

* Apache tuning.

A few other odds and ends.

Does this have anything to do with my Hot Topics page not loading and instead giving me a warning about the certificate?

HTTPS allows you to view/post over a secure connection (the little yellow lock down on the bottom of your screen).

Awesome, Jeff. Only real (geek) men use vi. http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif)

And Zok, what advantage does vi have in your opinion?

Whats the difference between Vi and Vim?

edit: *Just discovered*

How come the Hot Topics all change you to an SSL connection? Can you make it so the hot topic script just looks at the type of connection you have and keeps using it?

But anyway, thanks for doing all this, as I need HTTPS to get to totse at school!

Thank you Jeff! Proxies were way to slow.

For those of you wondering, theres two ways to connect to totse.

<OL TYPE=1>

<LI>https://www.totse.com

<LI>http://www.totse.com</OL>

#1 is the secure connection, it encrypts your data and other stuff I dont really understand, and it gets around a lot of internet filters.

But on IE it goes really slow compared to #2. So thats why you should use firefox. #1 on firefox goes faster than #2 on IE.

Once you have firefox then go to http://paradoxsector.com/index.php?showarticle=20 to make it even faster.

Also check out BLTC for a post made by panthrax that describes it better.

Once again, THANK YOU JEFF!

You people are dishing out the explanations on https that really isn't required.

Link (https://www.totse.com/en/_about/cert.html).

Oh, and to whoever asked, my school uses Novell. Of course, I just use https and it works fine. But then again, I get around most filters, I can always find a way to get to totse. Kinda sad though...

As for the Hot Topics turning to the secure server when clicked, I would guess it is Jeff wants everyone on a secure server for some unknown reason. Probably since totse is close to being considered a terrorrist site, the less hits that are picked up by the government the better. But I am probably wrong, knowing me.

Everything is available on http and https connections, I was just forcing the Hot Topics links to use https-only links for a few hours.

I want to try using some content-caching networks (like Coral) for static content, which means that all of the links to dynamic content (like the BBS) have to be hard-coded with http://www.totse.com/ or https://www.totse.com/ in the link. (I should just use Javascript to determine whether someone is currently using https or http and then insert the correct header.)

Coral is great for bypassing filters, unfortunately it doesn't work well with frequently-updated pages like the BBS. However, if you live in China or Myanmar or Saudi Arabia and you want to check out totse's (non-BBS) pages, you can't because the government won't let you. Coral gets around government filters.

ed was the original line EDitor. vi was the original VIsual (e.g. full screen) tiny text editor, which did everything ed did and then some (the : commands are mostly from ed). vim is vi iMproved.

Since vim does everything that vi does and more, most every Linux distribution symlinks "vi" to "vim", so you get vim, even if you want vi.

ed is still ed.

Try wujie.net

Edit: How good is knowing asian people? ;P these sites get past many filters 'cos they're in chinky languages. Just enter the site into the box, and click the button. Easy.

Why does all of the menu (About, Community, Bad Ideas, etc.) text appear in green when in HTTPS? I can still read it, but it's a pain in the ass. I am using version 1.0.3 of Firefox, and the problem doesn't happen in IE. Does updating Firefox solve this issue?

Hit refresh.

The green is due to the totse3.css styles sheet not loading. I've seen that happen when using Mozilla too, but when I hit refresh Mozilla grabs the style sheet and everything looks fine again. It usually happens the first time after you agree to accept the certificate. I think the CSS times out while the browser is waiting for you to decide whether to accept the certificate or not, so the browser thinks it has the style sheet when it doesn't.

Ah yes, that works. Thanks Jeff, that problem boggled my mind for quite some time, and all I had to do was hit refresh...

It doesn't try to install some exploit when you use IE, does it ?

No. It's just a plain old normal page with a proxy system that happens at the server end. Just like proxify.net except less well known and without the stupid ads.

*checks*

WTF, it's down or something. Try their parent site ultrareach.net it worked for me, but it's more likely to be blocked. -shrug-
