I got the htdig search engine back on-line last night. Search is working once again.

I'm still working on:

* Mail server setup.

* Submission page Perl libraries. (Some of the libraries I was using have been updated out of existence.)

* Apache tuning. (You may notice brief outages as I start and stop the web server.)

A few other odds and ends.

Do you have ANY idea how much work it is to maintain a mail server these days? There are mail quotas to configure, anti-virus and anti-SPAM measures to configure and maintain, there's web-mail setup and maintenance, and everything has to be tweakable via a web interface to keep people happy. Plus you have to be on-guard against people using your server to send SPAM, and there are always new ways to send SPAM.

The only way I would even consider it is if it was a paid service. Would you pay $20 a year for all of that? If there were 100 people willing to pay $20 a year, I'd set it up. There is no way I'd do that much work for free.

Almost didn't answer the second half of your question...

Upgrading the BBS is easy and cheap. I could do that tomorrow. You'd see an instant slow-down to the point where the system would be unusable, because the hardware required to run a BBS with 40000+ unique visitors per day isn't so cheap.

Right now totse.com is running on a single server. It's a kick-ass server, but it's ONE server. It barely supports the traffic that we have now. If I was going to upgrade to a database-based BBS system the processing power needed for the traffic this place gets would look something like this:

* Firewall.

* Load-balancer (distributes the load between web servers.

* Two web servers (for starters).

* Database server (to store BBS messages).

* Mail server.

That's 5 more servers than we have now. These are ~$1500 servers we're talking about, and the database server we'd need costs close to $8K, so with tax that's about $16000. I would love to do this, but it would require something along the lines of membership fees to make this happen -- advertising and merchandise (mostly) pays for the bandwidth and cabinet space, but not new hardware.

Every time I've brought this up in the past one or two people say they'd pay, but most people have slammed me for daring to suggest that they should ever pay anything for using this site, so it remains as it is. When people's attitiudes change, I'll set up a way to pay and buy the hardware. Until then, you get what we've got.

What about tweaking the software to allow a few stickies?

All we really need is the ability to make ONE sticky per forum. If there is more than one thread that needs stickying they can just make an index, sticky that and let the other ones float.
