I added links for totse.MeetUp.com, bookmarking an article using del.icio.us, and submitting a page to digg.com to the top of every page. (The pages are still being transferred to the live site -- it will take a few hours before all pages are updated.)

Hopefully I fixed all of the bugs. It took a while to get the code to work with the BBS system.

We need a new forum. However, since most modern forums use a MySQL database, it would be really hard to convert the current flat file database to MySQL. I say we just delete this forum and install something like UBB.threads. Screw all of the converting databases and lost information, we can deal with a few years loss of information for a new forum software.

As you may be aware there is an anti-terrorism publication in Australia. It has an image of someone on the internet...The website the user is looking at is clearly Totse. The image makes up a 'bigger picture' in piecing together a way of stamping out terrorism in Australia.

Assuming you gave no permission to use such a picture couldn't you approach this in some legal sense. Even if it is public domain or whatever you could probably argue that since the creation of the publication visits to totse.com have boomed and increased costs in maintaining the sites active status. Sue for damages?

Jeff, totse.com is really going down hill lately. As I am sure you have heard this before, it is really true now, this is coming from someone who has been on totse as a regular member since 2000. I have seen totse go up at times, and be really low at others. Right now, totse is probably as low as it can get.

Recently, I was checking out totse and a few other sites that are well known. SomethingAwful, The Best Page in the Universe, and a few others. I noticed that both The Best Page in the Universe AND SomethingAwful have MUCH more traffic than totse. Even though I really hate SomethingAwful, they have a great system of not having ads and redirects. They pay around $2,000 per month for bandwidth. They actually make money from user accounts. If the forum software was updated, and user accounts could be purchased (premium accounts, not all accounts should be paid) then totse could probably make a lot of money from that alone. Please, if you could, take off the "Sponsered Links" as well as the redirects. The Sponsored Links make totse load even slower than it does already, and the redirects means you have to load even ANOTHER page just to see the content.

Now, I am one of the most loyal fans of totse, and have loved it since I found it. Lately I have been posting a lot less and even considered leaving totse until things were corrected. This would be a bold move from me, as I have grown up on totse, and owe a lot of thanks to the users here for teaching me a lot more than most schools could teach me, but lately the ads and redirects have been so annoying that I really am coniderding find a new home on the internet.

Jeff, if you do read this, please take it into consideration and hopefully make some changes to totse.

Something that has REALLY made me suspect that the ads have made an extremely slippery slope is that every type of them is percieved universally as bad.

A sizable portion of the userbase of totse knows how to get free porn and that pheremones dont work (as seen in several threads several months ago in S&A).

I am really afraid that the adverts arent going to stop and this is the tip of the iceberg.

Its sad, but I think its true, this advertisement system isnt going to stop, and in my opinion, it only cheapens the look of our beloved site.

When I come to totse, I see old software, but its unique in that respect. UBB ensures that sigs and avatars are never paraded like your posts should be.

In anther respect, perhaps our software is analogous to modesty and others with "features" is whoredom in today's society?

It does pain me to say it, but I also think that if we were to move on to a user-supported system with premium accounts, that we still wouldnt get enough userbase simply because of our old software.

I think its entirely possible. Look at SG. The normal age of ttse has declined from years past. Pre-18's also tend to have no money, so no support there.

Back to ads: first we had the banners, then the side ads, and now full-blown redirects. This is telling me that the situation has only gotten worse.

In one respect thats a good thing, as it means that if Jeff's income has been the same, then our userbase has grown greatly.

That could also be bad: Jeff's income has declined and our userbase is still growing.









Whatever course of action you decide on, Jeff, please listen to people who sincerely want to help out. Much of your userbase would be glad to help you out with subscriptions.

I don't know why they're being locked. When a moderator asked me about Meet Up way back when, I said "That's kinda cool."

I would guess that one or more moderators are concerned that someone is using the "totse" name in a way that could get this site in trouble. I agree that that is a concern in a lot of cases, but in the case of Meet Up I'm not too worried about it. Getting together face-to-face has been a totse tradition since the very beginning. Meet Up helps facilitate more face-to-face meetings, and I think that's a good thing. (Hence the link at the top of every page.)

Money is always helpful. The people who host the servers don't accept love offerings, burnt animal sacrifices, or glass beads. They want cash to keep hosting the servers.

I'm not quite sure how you reach that bright red conclusion though. I'm using del.icio.us and Digg to help promote the site. I do things to help promote the site, that's one of my many jobs. More users doesn't necessarily mean more money though, it just means more people sucking more bandwidth.

A more reasonable conclusion might be that I just got a better deal on more bandwidth.

totse has always had a mix of the profound, the profane, and the pornographic. At one time the BBS had ads for porn sites on the banner and sidebar. If these links are offending your good taste I'm sorry, but those advertisers pay for the free service that YOU USE.

What pisses me off is that if I EVER got rid of the ads and instituted some sort of membership policy (which I am seriously considering) I would get ten times as much hate mail from the user base whining "How can you charge me $1? Waaaa! totse should be FREE for EVERYONE!"

There are a lot of things I would like to do. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do everything I want to do because I have a job and it takes up a huge amount of my time. If totse made enough to pay for itself that would be great. If it made enough to pay for my time I'd quit my job and do this full time.

Regarding your gripe on the redirect ads: I don't like them either. They should be set up to be MINIMALLY INTRUSIVE, meaning that you should only see one redirect ad in a 24 hour period. If that's not what you're seeing let me know.

I am testing them out to see how well they perform money-wise compared to the other ads. At first they were paying quite well. totse was actually paying for itself for about a week. Since then the revenue they're generating has fallen off, so they may not be here for long.

Jeff your making things way too hard. Set up a PO box. If each active member gave $1.37 (the 37 being the stamp) then wammo you would have a decent amount of cash. Shit even I would give and I hate most of the people on here.

Jeff, I highly suggest merchandice to help generate money. I remember the Cafepress page, which didn't get many sales at all. I believe this is because the designs were plain and dull. I know for a fact if they had better ideas, they could make a ton of money. Look at Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.com). He makes enough money from his store alone to pay for his site, as well as pay for his living conditions. SomethignAwful (http://somethingawful.com) also has a store, and they make damn good money off of it (as if they don't make enough from user accounts, but that is a seperate issue). I think that if you made some creative clothing, stickers, etc. that totse could make a good amount of money off of the sales, at least enough to be able to take down the redirect ads. I would be so confident that the clothes would sale, I would personally send money to help fund the start of a clothing line.

Also, I have noticed a few updates to the forums and site (small, but still updates) the last few weeks. I can only guess this is because you may have had a break from work, or have had ideas to work on totse. Does this mean that you may become more acitve on the site more, maybe even posting in regular forums again?

More than once I suggested we make new stuff for the store. Have each mod send in ideas for a shirt or something. If your thing is weapons and combat, have something weapons and combat related on the shirt. Go the way 2600 did and make some sort of useful fact on the shirt. For example, a popular 2600 shirt had the blue box plans on it. Maybe a weapons and combat shirt could have some sort of slogan with some gun or knife info. I dont know, im just throwing things out here. Anything would be better than whats in there now.

When I get a redirect ad, they come in waves. I'll hit the back button to go back to totse, then another one, and then another one. The only way to fix it is to reload totse or get adblock for firefox.

I don't mind the ads if they keep totse up. Anyways, I have only encountered them once so far.

Jeff, I demand to know your opinion on the totse WhatPulse (http://whatpulse.org/stats/teams/9300) team. You seem to support the Folding@Home, but I suspect this is because it is helpful to scientific studies on protein folding. However, the totse WhatPulse team is just for fun and I am not sure if it meets your approval. We will still do it either way, but I would still like to know your opinion on it.
