i believe that religion serves as a system of control. it attempts to install an idea of human freedom in return for ones complete devotion, thought and individuallity. it is A main cause of war and oppresion. although i am strongly apposed to religion i do remain agnostic and dont flame this coz this is only my OPNION

Religion is mainly for the purpose of explaining things that cannot be explained by Science at that present moment, But Religion isn't a main reason for war, it is an excuse all the crusades and jihads.....religion is an excuse a tool in politics when it has so much influence

Humans always need security. I think it is safe to say that. It is true for the majority.

I believe religion was created and formed to make people less worried and it tried to help them understand more. Well they were making a guess at what life was.

A belief that dwells exclusively within gaps in knowledge and human ignorance. A doctrine that is not so able to maintain itself in the light as it does in the dark. An idea, that, in short, is but a reflection of human frailty.

I dunno bout' you, but I say them theologians can keep that shit. I'll take the cold unforgiving meathook of reality any day over a blissful utopic illusory boldfaced Matrix-esque lie.

i agree with everything that has been said. and add that religion is nothing more than primative theories on why things are they way they are, nothing more.

Well religions are great tools, as they can influence judgement, public opinion and incite wars or at least give an excuse. But I must say it is quite comforting to have the idea that someone love's you always and no matter what you do always cares for you and will forgive you....sigh

A monk (all kinds of people and it had to be a monk) once said that religion for some people is a form of spritual crutch. you dont exactly need it if you know what to do or are strong enough for some kind of personal and or spiritual enlightenment and improvement. But for those people cannot attain such things by their own means are most welcome to get a religion.

That's more of a practical thing.

Or, at least, was originally.

Like the ban on pork and circumcision, the idea of the sabbath as a day of rest, was instigated by the ancient Hebrews as a way of allowing their workers and slaves some rest. (Whether this was out of benevolence, or simply managerial common sense, I don't know.)

Like the other practical traditions that were part of their culture, this practice was enshrined in their laws/religion (the same thing back then)

I'm not entirely certain where the idea of the sabbath as a day of worship came in. Maybe it was just a convenient way to kill two birds with one stone.

religion has mulitple purposes...

it was ment to explain things that the people of the time, had no way of explaining...

.And then some old guys discovered they could use it as a tool of manipulation... power and politics came into it then....

But the best use of religion, was to teach us to be nice to each other... as most forms of religion have some prescription for being nice to people, just because they are people, and the whole not judging them either....

so if the world used religion for the last purpose more often.. the earth would be a nicer place for everyone!
