According to Genesis, God created (amoung other things) animals, man, woman, and plants. In what order did the creation take place? Also, speaking of this God fellow, what is his exact name? Read Genesis 1 and 2 to find out!
Anyone know?

It doesn't say his name in my copy of the Tanakh. Traditionally I've heard him called Jehovah, but some sects used the term Jabulon.

Apparently, it's impossible to know his real name.
If you did know it, and said it, your head would explode.
I do believe it's plants, animals, man, woman.

I heard it was Jabulon because Ja, Baal, and On were all powerful pagan gods in and around Canaan, and the Jews kinda copped them.

Is it? Go read Genesis chapter 2 and double check that one for me, okay?

Acctually according to traditional stories and some hidden Torah/Talmud stories speaking the true name makes you accend straight into heaven. To directly consult
G-d on any matter you chose. Or as in some stories of lilith it makes you just plan fly.

Any other wealth I hoard, but I'm more than willing to share knowledge.

Jacob tried asking God his true name when they wreseled each other.
I heard about this, name means power, statement.

I contemplate the idea that as animals are "above" plants, and man is "above" animals, that possibly woman is "above" man... <shrug>
Then again, maybe the spirit is all the same and it's all equal.
Quien sabe.

Is it? Are you absolutely positive? Read chapter 2 and confirm that one for me, okay?

No, I'm not asking for some sort of interpretation as to the meaning, I'm just asking what order it occured in. Is that so much to ask?

Hmmm. Sorry if my musing caused you issues. It was stated that that was the order in a previous post and I was just pondering the meanings. Again, apologies if this created confusion or anxiety.

I think Eric is trying to make the point that Genesis contains two contradictory accounts of creation.

The traditional Jewish rendition is YHWH (the tetragrammaton). The name was so holy it couldn't be written in full, so we aren't sure how it was pronounced, but people generally say Yah-wey.
There are other names, too - Elohim, El, Elah. It depends where you are in the Bible. I'm sure the Jews have a lot more to say about the topic.

*BINGO!*
Now for the bonus round, you're all free to go check Exodus and find the 10 commandments... or was that the 8 commandments? Huh, I guess it depends where ya look, now doesn't it?
The point here, of course, is that in taking quotes from the Bible, they're going to be out of context no matter what because the Bible itself is inconsistent -- unless you divide it up certain ways, which no religion actually does.

Oh yeah, and as for the name of the deity... it depends where you look. One text refers to him as "God" no matter where ya look. The other set depends on the translation. Could be "Lord God," "Yaweh the God," "Jaweh the God," or something else entirely. Also note that this text clearly states that other gods do exist, whereas the "God" text states that no other gods exist.

If you're just making a point about the invalidity of the bible, well, you're preaching to the converted here, if you'll excuse the odd choice of analogy. http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)
I'm more interested in the bit of trivia, namely the name of God, primarily so I can impress my Judeao-Christian Tradition class. I was under the impression that Yahweh was a title or, alternately, God's method of telling Moses to mind his own damn business.

There's no way to know for sure, but it's interesting that most Bibles differentiate between "God" and "Lord God"/"Jaweh the God"/"Yaweh the God" in alternating sections.
If the name was something other than Yaweh the God, it was most likely lost long before the Bible was ever written down. You have to remember that people passed these stories on for generations before anyone even considered putting them in writing (hence the songs and poetry in the bible to make it all easier to remember.)

YHWH is an acronym of sorts.
Nobody knows today his real name.
Like I said, if I DO find out, I'll tell you.
