YAMA is part of raja yoga is about achieving salvation as a human being.....giving total and utter contentment and peace of mind....

there are 8 limbs to raja yoga......the first being YAMA (self restraint)

here i just mention 2 points of self restraint of which there are several.....and see if you think it makes sense..

some of the yamas are ....non killing, non violence, truthfulness, non stealing, contenance, and non covetousness..

just to show you the meaning of the above phrases, to a yoga man....

compared to a typical christian who obeys the 10 commandments......

in the 10 commandments .....it says thou shalt not kill...

this is how a yoga man interprets non killing

it means not doing an action with the intention of harming any living being(in thought word and deed).

the intention to inflict injury on anther arises out of greed, anger, envy and attachment. these are the main roots of violence...therefore a follower of non killing must give up avarice, anger, envy, attachment and desires. this practice means controlling the mind...

violence can be either committed caused, or approved by the man, or he instigates someone else to committ it....

in all cases the man is guilty of the sin of inflicting injury upon another...

one may cause injury or misery to another unknowingly and unintentionally by some act...

such an act would tantamount to an act of violence...

there are a number of acts of violence that a yoga man must not do ....so it is important for him to be very cautious and alert, so that he does not inflict or cause to inflict or approve of injury to another knowingly or unknowingly by thought word or deed.

once he has achieved this...the most cruel men animals or beasts give up their violence towards this person..

on entering the vacinity of such a person the vibrations of peace and love eminating from him are so powerful that one is bound to be influenced by them.

so you can imagine the social and spiritual value of non violence..

i personally believe jesus was such a person..i know in the bible he is said to have eaten fish....but i believe that in the presence of such people as jesus ghandi and mother theresa .....you will feel the love and peace.....ghandi was virtually a hindu ....mother theresa a catholic i think, and jesus....well i wont even go into that one.....all different religions....yet they all have this in common.....

maybe following religion is better practiced through actions such as the above.....maybe not.....

its up to you how you want to live your life, that is entirely your opinion ...and i respect it.

ALSO in the 10 commandments it says thou shalt not steal.....

this is how a yoga man interprets non stealing

to a yoga man, all acts of taking and desiring to take come under stealing.

There are three types of stealing….stealing for oneself…causing stealing …and approving of stealing….in any sense whatsoever.

Attachment greed and anger are the roots of stealing.

Numerous are the ways and means and types of stealing, but all these come under 2 main types……..physical stealing, and mental stealing.

A yoga man must understand that non stealing in reality means non desire by thought word or deed for any others things….

When a person is fully established in non stealing it is thought that great wealth comes to them.

A quick story.

2 guys went out to the jungle one day to collect fire wood.

The wife gave them some food to eat when they got hungry.

They kept all the food in one bag and mr a. carried it.

While they were collecting wood there was a strong storm of wind and they were separated while seeking a shelter.

Much time passed .

Mr a got hungry but would not eat in the absence of his friend..

He waited but all in vain as the storm continued.

Arguments and counter arguments rose in his mind, whether or not to eat his share in the absence of mr .b

He thought that under the circumstances there was no breach of trust or moral conduct if he ate his share in the absence of mr b.

So he ate his share.

Time passed.

He did not see any chance of mr b’s return soon.

His appetite started troubling him again, and then there was a tussle going on in his head, whether he should eat mr.b’s share or not to satisfy his hunger, as eating the share would surely be theft.

Eventually his desire to pacify his hunger grew so strong that it coined arguments in his favour, and so he ate mr. B’s share, thinking that by the time the storm was over they would find each other and head off home anyway, and mr b would say, of course it is ok you ate my share.

Since mr a. consumed his friend s share without his permission it was an act of stealing, for which it is said that he had to suffer in his life , by passing his days in utter poverty.

by the way ……a yoga man classes…the intake of any kind of drug as stealing….stealing the health away from his own body….so all intoxicants are out….

Maybe if we all took the commandment of thou shalt not steal and thou shalt not kill so seriously……..the world would be a better place…..

What do you think ?

I myself am guilty of all the above ……..but I shall bear it in mind for my future actions…….

Surely behaving in this way …..is the strongest form of prayer .

Stronger than getting down on ones knees and praying….

Stronger than giving 10 pounds a week to charity….

Stronger than going to church on Sundays .

Stronger than reading books.

Maybe not……

I know its not going to happen, but just picture a world where noone takes drugs…where noone steals and respect is shown to all forms of life.

There would be no religious violence …….no wars ……..no extinctions…..no rat race…

Surely this is true religion..

Maybe not….
