What's deism?

That's basically what I follow, that there does indeed seem to be a guiding force, a "god" if you will, in the universe. But that such a god just simply created the universe from the Big Bang and left it to evolve as it may.

It does have some sense to it. I believe that there is most likely a God and that he doesn't watch over us or guide us. He created us so we could simply exist and he doesn't interfere.

But I don't want to bind myself to a set of beliefes. Not being part of something specific allows me to freely evolve in my beliefes.

you people should read "the elegant universe"

Deism makes as much sense as saying yo' momma shit out the universe and flushed it down the cosmic sewer.

How so? Just because we as humans are fucking ourselves doesn't mean the entire universe is. We are as close to nothing as you can get in comparison to the entire universe.

Because both theories have exactly the same amount of evidence.

Any and all theories on how the universe was created have the same amount of evidence; none. Be them religious or scientific in origin.

So we should assume that there is some supreme being that created and abandoned the universe?

Argumentum ad ignorantum.

No, but we shouldn't dismiss it.

SEN D-F

.....and how do you know that if theres a God he abandoned the universe? There wouldn't even be any way to tell if he abandoned us, let alone the whole universe.

Deism comes about as close as anything does to what my gut feeling about the "truth" of the universe is. Atheism strikes me as off the mark, and all religions strike me the same way. Deism, however, seems reasonable in comparison.

Yes, that's exactly what we should do.

Because (referring back to my original point) , Deism has as much validity as saying yo' momma shit out the universe and flushed it down a cosmic sewer, both theories having the exact same amount of evidence.

We're talking about Deism; Deists believe that there is a god who created and abandoned the universe.

The universe doesn't care what your gut feelings are, and they have no effect on what is true.

You're doing circles.

You say we should dismiss it because it has no evidence. You accept that any theory on the universe truly has no evidence, and then come back again to say we should dismiss it because it has no evidence.

When did I say that I believed any of the theories about the universe's origins? More to the point, when did I say that all of these theories are without evidence?

Cosmic background radiation, an expanding universe, etc. are consistent with Big Bang theory; the only thing consistent with Deist theory is "it's my gut feeling".
