View Full Version : Why fear death?

I don’t fear death, it’s simple. You live – you die. The thought of missing life when you’re alive is just a misplaced feeling of an non existing melancholy, because you will be dead anyway.
I think death is the ultimate feeling of freedom, maybe so great that time isn’t relevant anymore, who knows. All that lode that you had to put up with (the good and the bad things) will flow away , don’t get me wrong I don’t want to die just yet but I think that I won’t fear it when it comes.
A nice death would be dying an old man, your family sitting by your side, no tears, just enjoying the moment of the peace to come. I won’t cry and my family won’t cry either. Maybe they will cry because they miss me butt that’s for after I’m dead and it’s understandable.
I just think that death is looked upon to negative, by people, by religion, by education, …
I’m an atheist and I’m going to teach my children that dying is just as valuable as living, why should we fear death if death is part of life? Fear for death is like living in a cage, it’s a feeling you can better live without.
No religious bull crap, no fairy land.
Just accept it and feel enlightened.

Many people fear life
I view death as soemthing new and most likely exciting. I somewhat look forward to death in that it will be something completely new and different. But I'd also like to do some shit while I'm alive first.

Not that I'm looking forward to dying, but I am curious about what, if anything, happens next.
But other then that, I agree with 'You live, you die'. So make sure you live to the max. Don't be a sorry ass sap on your death bed, regretting stuff you never did.

I don't understand this word death, because I've never experienced it. I have, however, experienced changing different physical forms.

Why would you be afraid of death? It sounds a hell of a lot easier than life.

Im certain that something happens after death, from some weird experiences I've had, which convinced me there is _Somthing_ more to life, but I have no idea what.
And if I was wrong, it isnt like I would be able to get upset about it.

It's an evolved survival mechanism.
A species that is completely fearless would likely die out in less than a month. While a "pussy" species that is afraid of death will avoid death, allowing to procreate and thus making more species that dont want to die.

^^^Hence why religious fools are populating the earth like wildfire. They seem to be the only people really afraid of death, although they claim not to be. Why else would they believe something so illogical and unprovable.

Pain.

Many people fear death because they dont understand death... other fear death because they think (or know) its gonna be painful...
Those that dont are smart... they just accept it as a part of life...

Fearing death is like fearing the sun rising tomorrw. When it comes down to it, there's really fuck all you can do about it, you might as well make the most of tonight.
So, if death is so great, why are you all not dead yet?

my fear of death is not thing itself. It's if their will be a second act to my existence.... or will the curtins simply close taking my sentience away with it. I just hope that thier some new adventure awaiting me on that other side of that stage. "somthing completly different" in the words of the montey python crew. So in closing I understand where you cats are coming from, when you say that your not afraid to die. netheir am I. Im just afraid to lose myself/sentience

Many fear death becuase of the idea that there may be nothing after life. They are scared of a non exsitence.
Think of it this way though; 200 years ago you didn't exsit, yet you werent scared of it then or now.

personally, i feel if i die, then i die. the threat of taking my life is another thing. that can be scary. but dying in and of its self is something that everyone should be prepared for.
now about dying as an old man, i think i would have to disagree, recently me and my friends were thinking about what we would do if we were put up for war crimes or something and the tribunal told us that we can pick any way for them to kill us possible, i said i would rather be blown up with the biggest hydrogen bomb on the planet and one of my friends said that he would rather have to jump off a building into a crowd with C4 strapped to him

i don't fear death, only dying. i want to either die an old man, peacefully in my bed, or get killed fighting for a good cause. either of them i'd be satisfied with, anything else i'd fucking hate.

I don't fear death it's just that the fact that there will be total and complete nothingness scares me because when you dye there is nothing. I guess the reason this thought scares me so much is that i'm afraid of the dark and my biggest fear is of being alone; of being total by myself with no company, no one to talk to, just nothingness. But I guess you will be dead and you won't even know how it feels but if you think about it there is no way to know how death feels. No way to know what awaits or what doesn't await us when we die, unless you believe that when you die you go to heaven or hell but whatever I think that is total B.S. O well I think that I have a fairly long time to wait until I die...actually I have no idea when I'm gonna die....damnit!

read philipians 1:21-23.
it states how the writer wants to die.
he wouldn't be saying he wanted to die if he feared it.
Many a person has fought for their breath, to gasp one last breath of life.....so don't be so sure you will welcome death, until you get there.
I won't lie, I do fear death, because it is something that removes me from life. Personally, I like to live. Yeah, we all like to think of dying an old man or woman, but death isn't waiting for a bunch of us...and I hope its not me....one of you guys go since you think it is so cool to die and get embalmed and stuck in a coffin.
Its not a case of thinking its cool. Its inevitable, nothing can prevent it from happening. So why not just look at it as what it is, a chang in reality and nothing more. If we're still here when we die, we will simply be in a different state.
So why sit around being afraid of it. If it happens it happens, oh well. Theres no reason to be afraid of death, even if you're gonna die next week, because whats gonna happen is gonna happen and you gotta accept it and hope for the best.
I dont think I'd been afraid to die if it was peacefull. Say you knew you wouldnt wake up when you went to sleep that wouldnt be to bad. But if death involved lots of pain physical or emotional Id be afraid of it. Whats more likely dying old and peacefully or dying in a car accident or being shot or some other shitty way to die?
i think that if u get shot in the head or somthing that smashes ur head to a broken melon then u loose ur mind (lol) and then u cant think and cant breave...etc..
but if u die by just dying in a fuckin chair then ull remember ur life and so on,
the other thing is that we were made to eat each other(not humans..seen in a big way and not to give a fuck about the other guy next to u...

That sounds pretty stupid.
If you die you die. You burn to death, you have a heart attack, you drown, you get your head blwon off! What would how you die have to do with your death?
And even still, whether you get shot in the head or just fall asleep dying or something you will be brain dead. The former quicker then the ladder, but not by much.
Fear of the unknown and an inbuilt survival extinct.
What does it mean to cease to exist, to cease to experience?
