I think if god has a physical appearance then it's the universe and everything in it.
I don't think there'd be any negative efefcts from seeing God. If God had a physical form it would/could be anything and everything. And as form his 'true' form, is he has one it probably wouldn't be anything we could comprehend. It would most likely be something outside of our physical realm, and we probably wouldn't be able to see/hear/taste/touch/smell or interact with anything outside the physical world because our minds are bound to it and even if we had the ability to our midns wouldn't let us see it because they truly wouldn't accept it.
But I don't beleive God to be anything in specific, so he oculd be anything. Perhaps hes as Beany said, a collective of the entire universe and all its properties.

It's like the "what gender is God" thing.
If religious folks are right and God is a "spiritual" being (whatever that's supposed to mean) then the concepts of gender and appearance are meaningless in reference to it.
Of course, the Bible says humans were created in his image.

Well if it wasn't for the shell we wouldn't be human but i've seen bodies do some inhumane things.

i'm sure that if god exists then he can appear like a piece of cheese to us if he feels the need. He could probably appear as something that would make our brains explode, but that would be kinda mean.

i find it easier to begin with...
1. god is in everything and is everything.
2. to bring an image of god into our world would then surely be an image that is personal to us and works as the sign post to our deeper understanding.
i think there's been some fantastic impressions of what god could look like and you can either chose one of those or make one of your own up because if you think about it. the illustrations of god that exist were only made up by another human being creating their subjective impression of god.
when creating your impression of god, you make a form for god to exist in for you. no one said that god is a man or a woman. god can be a stone or a tree. as long as you understand that all images of god are signposts pointing in the direction of a deeper understanding of god.
go create.

Well, I don't know about God, but the Dark Lord is immense beyond imagining, with three heads, a shark, a baboon, and a human. He's clothed in black and carnage, and wields the awesome power of the ION fist.

In most religions you can see what they thought of their God(s). In christian religion he looks like Zeus.
Old man, with a white flowy beard, yea that's Zeus Alright.
