I know Jesus preached about peace and love and went against the establishment, and all the old men in the smoke-filled rooms twiddling their beards frowned upon his actions, but was he comparable to modern-day hippies?

Not only did he wash his own feet, but he washed other's as well. I am going to have to say no...he was too clean to be a hippy.

By his own words, he was not about spreading peace.
"Think not that I am come to send peace on Earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword"

jesus was a punk!
the original anti-establishment punk dude.
they called him NAZ the PUNK.
now naz the punk was going round stiring up the people sayin' that he's gettin' the word sent to him direct, and it's the word of lord god almighty-punk. the top punk. this word is about free minds and the spirit of punk in all of you.
the people up-rose and believed in themselves as one and they all followed naz the punk and pledged faith to him and his dad, lord punk.
the hippies didn't happen till much later.

it went something like this...
in the beginning was light and light came from darkness... so you see... it all started in the dark.
energy had been floating 'round in the dark just feelin' and that feelin' was love. so love in the dark was where it all started.
now this energy, we've called it love, decided that something this good had to be shared.
love or god, which is really the same thing, got itself all movin' and swirlin' to the point where the sparks began to fly.
great balls of fire were flyin' off everywhere and lightin' up the dark light great fireworks. (what a sight that must have been) then bang! the sun appeared. g-love was feelin' it's warmth.
from that point, g-love knew how love was gonna be shared.
to cut along story short, g-love decided to turn some concentrated love into a human fella to do some important love spreadin'.
g-love had always been fond of the name jesus, so that's what he was called. g-love said unto jesus... "spread it, tell of it, sow it, grow and feeeeel it. don't worry 'j.', it's in endless supply."
"what shall i call myself, g-love?"
g-love pondered and said... "naz the punk."
"punk?" asked j.

Of course Jesus was a hippy. The long hair, the sandals, the talk of peace and love. Hell, all that's missing is the LSD!

Yoshua was anti-institution, he disliked fashion slaves. Hippies are fashion slaves that sold out for cheap. In fact you can say that for any institution that requires you to join, and excludes some.

Why would I need LSD when I had shrooms?

i never read anywhere in the bible that Jesus was a fan of the Grateful Dead. Maybe it's in Mark...
I guess Dave Matthews is a modern day prophet, and John Popper is a Martyr!

Music isn't what makes someone a hippy. And being a hippy isn't what make someone a messiah.
