do you guys do it? does it work for you? if so, what kind do you do? It really helps me calm down, but i cant just start meditating every time i get pissed. What do you guys reccomend for me?
yeah.. i pray whenever im pissed/confused/need guidance.. etc...
i guess its the same, except instead of sharing the experiance with only myself, i share it with God and myself, so i can get his insight, after prayer i feel better, alot better, warmer, everything is okay, i contemplate and talk inside my head, its really calms you down =) good to get in touch with yourself
Edit: If your Christian, try meditating through prayer, but if your not. you can sit down, go into a relaxed position for yourself, and inside your head just contemplate as much as you can, be calm, think about things that are bothering you, etc... Its a really peaceful, strong experiance

I have to get away from everything in order to meditate. I take a walk by myself, sit down, and just start noticing things around me. I'd touch the blades of grass around me and try and picture what they look like without looking at them. I'd close my eyes and feel the effects of wind against my face. Through doing this, I lose my sense of bodily awareness.
As for recommendations? Find a comfortable space, and start concentrating on your breathing. Eventually, you will start breathing at the same pace without conscious thought. Everything else that occurs with meditation just kind of happens afterwards.
I enjoy meditation a lot. I highly recommend it, especially when dealing with stress, or when you're plain bored.

Listen. Listen for your inner sound/vibration, then focus on it and then you will see light and colour. Do not 'try' to see or hear, simply focus on the present moment and being fully conscious. Taste, smell, hear, feel, see, all at one moment.
IMHO prayer is similar to meditation, however it requires the use of verbal skills and also, ususally, involves past or future events, whereas meditation is about clearing the mind.
As one enters into deeper states of meditation, breathing slows, not consciously, it is natural, then one may hear a peculiar knocking sound, the sound of Om - the creative vibration.
Highly recommended!

It sounds like you've been reading Yogananda redzed, am I right? Either way I like it, that is kind of what I do.
But you are not quite right with prayer, there are a few different types, contemplative prayer is basicly medition, well it is, just with a different name, however there is a few different approachs to this aswell.
True prayer and true meditation are the same thing, union with God.

i do two (edit-4) kinds of meditation.
the first i pick a shape, like...a red triangle, and "imagine" it in my head, visualizing it for as long as i can. this really has no purpose, but it does calm me down, and is fun, for me anyways. its pretty hard to get over, say, a second constintly.
the other one is similar, only i visualize, inner contemplate, nothing. its bliss. its very difficult to get in that state, but once you get it its easy to keep. its like the opposite of the other, thats easy to start, hard to keep.
edit-this feels like, well have you ever zoned out while sitting in your desk or riding in a car, and everything gets fuzzy, like all your senses, and youre thinking nothing, no inner monolouge(sp) just watching a undefined spot on the floor or out the window with your eyes unfocused? its like that only massive feeling of it.
edit2-- and mantra yoga, which helps in dharana. remember "aummmmmm" from cartoons. well they didnt make it up. its a great mantra. if you dont mantra, your mind wanders and you say shit in your head like "yay im doing it" then you fuck it up.
and breath control. 4 fold breath, only i do it more than 4 secs each. breath in for n-time hold for n-time exhale for n-time hold with no air for n-time.
oh yeah this is called dharana and samadhi (respectivly.) well the second one's goal is a state of samadhi. damn i had to look up how to spell those...pisses me off, i used to know.

I turn on my black light, stare into my lava lamp and get lost in it for hours on end...I guess it is a form of meditation; afterwards I feel as if I could do anything I wanted without the slightest stress.

Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
- Harold Whitman
It is crucial for you to understand what meditation is. It is not some special posture, and it's not just a set of mental exercises. Meditation is the cultivation of mindfulness and the application of that mindfulness once cultivated. You do not have to sit to meditate. You can meditate while washing the dishes. You can meditate while washing the dishes. You can meditate in the shower, or roller skating, or typing letters. Meditation is awareness, and it must be applied to each and every activity of one's life. This isn't easy.
