Title says it all...I'm interesting in becoming a Buddhist, but would like to really learn a lot more about it first.

http://buddhism.about.com is a good introduction to Buddhism.
I'm a buddhist who focuses mostly on Zen Buddhism, I could give you the title of some books to read if you're interested in that.

If you don't know about buddhism, how do you know you want to be one? I fucking hate that shit. You just want to become buddhist so you can be "different" from your other white community? Don't even try, it's harder to be buddhist than christian. You want to be buddhist?
Are you ready to give up alcohol?
drugs?
excess food?
hours of your day on intense meditation?
countless hours of sutta study and application?
no? then don't even try.

A) I'm black, bitch.
B) I don't do alcohol or drugs
C) I know the basic idea behind Buddhism and its history. Clearly this post was made to learn more about it before I even began to commit.
D) You're an idiot...and a bit too eager to try to show off.

You are already a buddha but your inner self is polluted by craving things.
And now you crave to be a buddhist
theres a book called "A primer of soto zen" I cant remember the authors name.

Buddhism is definetly a more attractive religion. Why did you choose it, personally? What influenced you?
From what I've read/explored on it, it truly seems to convey through it's teachings that the "truths" it holds can only come from within your inner consciousness. Now THAT is believable.
I struggle with it because I am leery of any form of dogma, in general. Buddhism may be the most attractive route to take, but I'd be hard pressed to avoid those pernicious memes they inevitably dump into your head, all the while attempting to be a "faithful follower".

I'm not not an idiot, I wouldn't hesitate to say I probably have more knowledge on this subject than anyone else on this forum.
I said that because I am sick of seeing my temple overrun with whities who aren't even serious, they are just looking for an alternate route or counter-culture to their social christian norms.
There are many forms of buddhism, you can't possibly know enough if you don't know what form your interested in, some are amazingly radically different.
Eager to show off? No, like I said, I'm sick of white kids seeking my faith and lifestyle purely in an effort to be "different", which 90% of them are. Go to a college or high school buddhist club or society, they are just white folks "exploring" eastern culture and thought, they aren't serious at all. I don't consider you a student at all if you haven't read at least the Lotus Sutra. And I had formal schooling from monks, so step off. If someone posted shit about afro-centrificy you'd be quick to point them out wrong, it's my culture and heritage, I am claiming it.
p.s. I'd love to have a black kid in my temple, more color the better.
