View Full Version : Which ten commandments?

Yesterday I ran across an interesting fact in the bible:
Exodus 20, Moses recieves the 10 commandments
Exodus 32, Moses gets pissed and smashes them
Exodus 34, Moses recieves 10 DIFFERENT COMMANDMENTS, yet they are intended to be like the first.
After some searching I managed to find 3 comments on this text:
quote:Talmud, Nedarim 22b: Had Israel not sinned with the Golden Calf, they would have received only the Five Books of Moses and the book of Joshua. Why? Because, as the verse (Ecclesiastes 1:18 ) says, "Much wisdom comes through much grief."
quote:Midrash, Rabbah: G-d said to Moses: Do not be distressed over the First Tablets, which contained only the Ten Commandments. In the Second Tablets I am giving you also Halachah, Midrash and Aggadah.
quote:Talmud, Bava Batra 14b: Both the [Second] Tablets and the broken Tablets, were placed in the Ark.
This has led me to the conclusion that this is no seperate ten commandments, but in fact a continuation of the original. A rewriting almost, in light of the sin of the Golden Calf.
In a discussion with a friend we also managed to clarify a bit more that these new commandments were introduced perhaps as a set of clarification rules as determined by the act of the golden calf.
For example, in the first set, it mearly says no graven images, but in the second set it declares no MOLTEN gods, as the golden calf was.

The Protestant Ten Commandments are the same Ten Commandments that the Jews possess, thusly, you'll forgive me if I give them a little more weight... http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif)

there's a little page on it at: http://www.positiveatheism.org/crt/whichcom.htm where all three are compared, side by side, including both the first and second set.
and naturally plenty of religion hate commentary within.

The person who wrote http://www.positiveatheism.org/crt/whichcom.htm is a Dumbnut!!!
Look at his list of 10 Commandments, near the bottom "Second Tables of Stone (Exodus 34)"...This guy lists "Additional Commandments" as the "10 Commandments" and plays it off as this is what Moses wrote on the two tables of stone....but what does the Bible say .....
quote:Exd 34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
Moses walked off that mountain with the "10 Commandments" of Exodus 20. Nothing in Exodus 34 says he walked down with this Guys list!!!!
Heres what he says Moses came down the mountain with on the stones....
1. Thou shalt worship no other god (For the Lord is a jealous god).
2. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods
3. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep in the month when the ear is on the corn.
4. All the first-born are mine.
5. Six days shalt thou work, but on the seventh thou shalt rest.
6. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, even of the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.
7. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread.
8. The fat of my feast shall not remain all night until the morning.
9. The first of the first fruits of thy ground thou shalt bring unto the house of the Lord thy God.
10. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.
Dont Assume these were the "10 Commandments" that Moses wrote on the two stones like this Athiestic Dumbell.........
Not all Clowns are in the Circus...

Everyone breaks the protestant second commandment bro. It basically says no statues of anything. You can't tell me that all of those "jesus on the cross" statues, necklaces, etc. aren't breaking that?

I have only seen crosses with Jesus on them in Catholic churches. Just the cross is used by most other denominations in North America. Aparently if they do not depict an actual god or something worshipable they are ok. Those fish on the other hand might be interpreted as idols if you find the right nut.

You are a dumbass aren't you?
Exodus 34.27: AND THE LORD SAID TO MOSES: WRITE DOWN THESE COMMANDMENTS, FOR IN ACCORDANCE WITH THESE COMMANDMENTS I MAKE A COVENANT WITH YOU AND ISRAEL.
Read the commentary and LAW that I posted on the matter. It was agreed upon thousands of years ago that these commandments were put in place in addition to Exodus 20 for a reason.

I am realy not sure if it is the crusifixes or the statues of saints that cause people to think Catholics are idol worshipers. Probly the saints.

to me it is like this: fuck religion, it gets in the way of everything from relationships (male.female.friend.foe.etc.) to aquaintances (sp) to family to work to life. we are at war because of religion. (well now its turned to money but it started as a religious bout (bush even said that 'god' told him to go to war, that it was the right thing to do...so your god told you to go fight their god...[a WHOLE other subject http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)], and to some extent is still being fought out through insurgents for so called religious faith based beliefs) i grew up in a 'christian' family and extended family, all i have seen is how the religion consumed these peoples lives and became a noose around their necks, slowly through the years tightening until finally they could not breath anymore. the only solution, cut the g-ddamn rope from around the neck and be free of the bondage.
there is no reason to be bound by religion and completely drop your soul off at the local babtist church. for most people the only thing they beleive in is what they have been raised with all of their lives. there is no distinction when they are adults as to what else there might be that drives the soul. (besides a book not unlike the canterbury tales called the bible)
it is up to each individual to discover what lies ahead as well as behind us. by simply taking some time each day to meditate and discover who we really are, we soon realize the we dont have to beleive in anything. a good idea will cleanse the soul, as well as revive whatever life you have left coursing through your tatered, religious veins. bedding down with one belief system seriously hinders ones ability to grow spiritually and mentally.
anyways i have to get my working ass to bed, but im not trying to step on peoples toes, i respect that everyone is going to do what they are going to do. im not putting my foot down...just throwing two pennies in the mix...see how much change we come up with...

tulip.king, the trick is not to waste your time in a religion full of bullshit, but one that makes sense.
Christianity is bullshit. Completely. It's full of it.
Raelians are bullshit.
However, Buddahism isn't bullshit, shintoism isn't bullshit, sikhism isn't bullshit, and Judiasm isn't bullshit. There are other religions that aren't, but this is just a short list.
Don't trust religions that base their religion on hijacking other religions.

I just watched a great program about Jesus on The Discovery Channel. It was going on about loads of stuff I say all the time, but credible people were saying it! Ahh, it felt so good.
And to any Catholics with the keys to the Vatican, please can I check if you left our Ark down there?

And this supports my idea that these emblems are a form of Idolatry.
Nobody got it when I said it, but you have hit the nail on the head.
Thanks, Tribe.

I know. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif) I went to Catholic school for 8 years, because it's better in education that all the public schools here, and all the Episcopalian/Protestant schools were shut down due to lack of funds.
So I know about that. It made me sad when I walked into there. So many times I wanted to say "If it says to pray to God alone, then why do you pray to the saints?!?" Too bad that I would've been suspended. Maybe I'll do that soon, since I've already graduated from there.
Edit: A pet-peeve of mine that that school did was they always implied that Christianity and Catholocism were one and the same. They would exchange Catholic for Christian, and vice versa all the time. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)

Be glad you're not an orthodox Jew--each of the dietary laws is a commandment, the whole schmeer adds up to over 450.
