View Full Version : Whats wrong with our world now?
I saw on totse today about 3 different threads about date rape drugs and how to get them and use them. Then there was a good number of people actually helping the person. What the fuck has happened to ourselves. Everyone is so hedonistic now they forget about other people. its not just the date rape thing but many things in this world are disgusting to me like child porn being called art and so many other things. What has happened to us? I think there is something inherently wrong with our world right now and it makes me very sad as a person. Do you guys notice these things?
it's not whats been happening now, The worlds always been like this, since the start of the human race, Nothing can be changed about it, your just starting to see it all

As i've gotten older i've come to realize that myself and the group of friends i grew up with are the only people i know that i can count on to do the "right" thing, and be mature about life in general. And a lot of my friends are sort of just falling into the abyss now that we're all seperate in different colleges.
I do agree that it's something that's always happened, but every generation has to succeed their previous generation, so it is getting worse, and happening at younger ages.

My theory--the world is becoming a behavioral sink due to overcrowding (and other factors). Take a lab rat colony--as long as they have plenty of room and enough food, all the rats get along fine, no prob.
Crowd them enough and threaten the food supply, you get a behavioral sink, the rats get all stressed and turn on each other.
I know, primates are not rats, but we share better than 90% of their DNA.

This is sort of tangent to Arm's comment but i have a friend who believes Tobacco products are a conscience form of population control.

With roughly 6.4 billion inhabitants, it's not working very well, is it?

enter islam we kill rapers and children molesters
Awesome.
The world has not always been like this. There are some of us who still hear the echoes of an archaic age, who still act with propriety and dignity, who abhor the defections from supreme order.
I can't imagine the Templar or the Samurai looking at themselves under the same light as they would view harlots, pederasts, merchants, and thieves.

It's just symptomatic of the general loss of a sense of honor in modern society, as well as a loss of "place". A samurai knew thay were better than a farmer, and that that farmer was in turn better than a merchant. People have lost that sense of honor, and have at best a passing tribute tomthose few who retain it, because it pains them to know what they have lost.

Where did you get that information from? I'm no Geneticist, but that just doesn't sound right at all. If you have a source, please do post it and enlighten us all.
Not flaming, just curious.

Yeah correct me if i'm wrong but i thought plants had RNA, not DNA.
Also, who needs honor when we have money.
there's a quote i heard somewhere (maybe even on totse) that seems to apply well to the mentality of the capitalist-mercantilist world of today... it goes something like this:
'the problem is not that you think highly of yourself, or that you think poorly of yourself, but that you think constantly of yourself.'
the main philosophical proposition on which our modern economy is structured is critically flawed in one respect. this idea that individual selfishness benefits the whole of society effectively neglects the innate capability of most human beings to genuinely care for the well-being of another.
when our heartfelt attempts to better the lives of loved ones around us are thanklessly met with skepticism, and even hostility, our thoughts instinctively turn selfishly inwards, feeding the system of hedonistic moral desperation. evetually, this empathetic ability atrophies completely from lack of sustenance.
a possibility, anyway.

Bill Maher was talking to Drew Barrymore about her newfound interest in politics and her "get out and vote" documentary that recently aired on MTV.
She started saying that "voting is about knowing yourself well enough to choose a candidate who best represents you".
And Bill interrupted and said "the reason kids don't vote is because they've been taught their whole lives that the world revolves around them and they don't care about anyone but themselves".
I think Eli and Bill Maher are onto something.

Now, what is your conclusion based on, Lucky? Three threads from one website? My, we are quite the little researcher, aren't we?
Our society is not going to hell, it's been there for years. Supposing there is such a thing.
Ah, I don't know anymore. What with common metaphors and similies it's hard to make an underworld or paradise comparison without throwing religion into the mix.
On with the rest of this, the news is just dying to make people think crime rates are up. When, actually, they've been going steadily down for the past five years or so.
Or I could be lying and just wanting to post something as I just registered here this super-awesome day.

Eil- that quote was tops.
I think it's very true, and lot of sociological frameworks would probably support the propostion.
Our economies, our political, social, legislative and culture structures all seem to increasingly reinforce the dominance of the individual. This is very dangerous.
Now the question is, do we bend over and take it?
If we think that this sort of thing is a problem, then in what practical ways can we do something about it?

So we do with fruit flies. That doesn't mean anything.

Even up to the spots on their skin when they are getting old. But seriously, 99% look a bit much to me.

I would like to know where it is from.
i don't remember, but i'm pretty sure it had something to do with buddhism.
