just wondering:
Catholics believe in the father, son and holy spirit right? So if you call a priest, father or padre, isn't that sacreligious sort of? Like when you confess your saying that they are the father, or is it totally just a play on words, and taken at face value?

Supposedly God is channeled through the priests, so when you say Father to a priest, you are addressing God, not the human he is channeled through. And then in return, when the priest talks to you in reply, it is supposedly God's channeled words.

Correct.
Here's an article straight from the Eternal Word TV website expanding on that topic. (http://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/father_for_priests.htm)

Apparently the Roman pagan church priests were also called father and the title was simply transferred as were the holidays like easter and xmas.
How is it the catholics use this term when their new testament says to call no man father?

This bit of dogma was added to the religion to clear that up.

Sounds like doublespeak http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif), on the one hand the supposedly infallible book says to call no man father(which the priest undoubtedly is - no women priests http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif) ), and the infallible word of the church contradicts that. Smoke and mirrors, or an insidious deception?

catholics just throw out stuff that goes against their mafia like teachings...
like in the bible it says call no man father but they try and redeem themselves by saying God is in the priests.. hes not
and by throwing out the commandment of idols
no idol shall be made to anything on earth, the sea, or in heaven.. so the statues of mary, jesus, and all saints are actualy idols and is considered a breaking of the commandment.. but instead they throw that commandment out and add another covet commandment
also.. purgatory
purgatory was invented by a priest to raise money to build a cathedral and the teaching stuck
conclusion: Catholics make up their own teachings , not from the bible at all

that is un-needed, most priests dont even do that, its just a few that are dickheads

Is that why catholic parishioners always call the priest Father?

ive attened catholic schools all of my life and the chuches teaching on the whole idol thing is not about building statues its about worshiping it. the church says that we are supposed to respect the statues of jesus and what not and to "venerate"(respect) them becasue they symbolize the saints on earth
