I want to make my own, not buy a knife and personalise it... does anyone have any ideas? I've got whitethorn wood for the handle but I need a black blade, and not just paint...

Make it out of steel and heat it in a hot fire til it glows then let it air cool, if you quench it some of the fire scale will probably flake off. Once it cool heat it up till it is somewhat hot but not glowing or anything and rub it with wax, that will make it all nice and shiny black instead of flat black. I assume because its an Athame it will never cut anything more than a wedding cake so you do not need to worry about heat treating or putting a sharp edge on. If you are careful you could put a bevel on the edge and sharpen it without chipping off the firescale.
