View Full Version : On Praying For Credit Cards

I work at Home Depot as a cashier (I don't recommend this job... ever). Today, a woman came up to my register, and in order to pay for her items, she pawed through her pocket book looking for a way to pay. This woman, nose deep in her pocket book, actually says to me, "Pray for me; I think I lost my American Express card."

......

Rather than writing an extended rant on how obviously shit-headed this is, I'll ask a question that will prevent this topic from being moved to B&M:

What, if anything, do you invoke God or the gods for?

I'd rather get my faced chewed off by orangutans than work with food.

Well, in away i agree with her. In all things pray, praise, and give thanks.

But there is atleast two reasons that i think the woman was wrong. First, people tend to thing of God as their own personal genie, and not the Sovereign God. Second, although i dont think it is wrong that someone prays for someone else or that more than one person pray, the thought process seems to be that one feels that ones own prayer is insufficiant, so they help from others. I get the feeling that many people think that prayer is the 'thing' that accomplishes something. Those people tend to not understand that a prayer of request is only a request from a (humble) subject to The Sovereign God (Who, for believers, is Father). This is the same line of thinking that i think Catholics have when praying to Saints or having the priest pray for them. My feeling on the matter is that if i, as a believer, am a son of God, should i not be allowed to ask my Father for something, without intervention or help from another human being (living or dead).

In that case, your face would be food! So you're fucked either way http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif)

OK; I'd rather have a rhino do jumping jacks on my groin than work with food. Happy? http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

Not that I'm a fan of doing anything on my knees, but the last thing I would ever... EVER... EVER pray for is money. Jesus had better be re-writing his script when he comes around a second time, cos that whole "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" speech doesn't seem to be sinking in with his congregation.

[EDIT: 'an rhino' simply doesn't make sense.]

Ya, alot of things arent sinking in. For one thing, many people (both beleivers and non-believers) read or hear about other people's comments and believe them as gospel, but seldom read the Bible and try to understand it by what it says. People like to take short cuts, but dont question who is giving the directions for the short cut, or question that the one(s) giving short cuts could be wrong.
