I was driving in some country and i saw an amish family. It made me think about it alot of things. Are they happier then us? Money doesnt rule thier world. Everyone is equal in thier eyes. I would never want to be amish. What are your thoughts on the amish...?

I find the simplicity and integrity of their lifestyle attractive and respectable. However, my lack of belief in Christianity (or even a supreme deity) would certainly prevent me from being accepted into an Amish community. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif) (This ideological conflict also dashed my childhood dream to become a nun, I might add.)

I watched a cool documentary on the Amish a couple years ago titled "Devil's Playground." It's about rumspringa, a time when an Amish youth is free to explore the diabolical world of sin and corruption; then, they determine if they want to remain in the Amish community. It's kind of like Amish Kids Gone Wild - smoking meth, snorting coke, having sex, etc. Interesting little film.

Yeah, I remember they brought that up in an episode of ER. In that episode, a couple of Amish kids get shot trying to score weed on the Southside of Chicago. I thought that was humorous.

I live in Ohio(large Amish population), and the only thing I can say about the Amich is that they know how to cook. During the summer my aunt and my mum went to go shopping in an Amish village, I went along. For lunch we went to this Amish restaurant, for 8.99 I got a ham steak, mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, and a piece of pie. One of the best meals I ever had.

The Amish is probably the closest anyone has ever gotten to an utopian society.

I would like to live in a society like that but I feel for me it's impossible after being exposed to so much, and being so accustomed to daily life in society. I could live in the woods in a cabin but I'd need communications at least.

I know how you feel Kel. Sometimes i think it would be a lot better to live off the land, but then again, I'm a computer programmer.

It would be fucking sweet to catch my own fish and hunt to survive and stuff. But i also like to write software.

Yes. Except for all their super strict social laws.

Fuck through a hole in the sheet?! I'd rather burn in Hell.

Cheers,

many years ago the wife and i seriously considered joining an old order mennonite community....we didn't but sometimes i wonder how different our life would have turned out.

anyway bucket loads of respect for the amish and their determinatin to live their faith in todays world. i don't agree with much of what they believe but hell i don't agree with much most christians believe!

yeah rumspringa surprised me too when i first encountered it...[hee hee-what a good idea. other strict christian parents should adopt it !]

there is amish community living near my family, i kinda respect their line of thought.

But the thing that does bother me is that they shouldnt be on the hilly country highways after dark...atleast not without bright flashing lights like an ambulance or tow truck.

They hate Shi'a.

They start to reek of Sunni and Wahabbi supremacy.

I was eating at an In&Out here in fresno, when I looked over my shoulder I saw some Amish people staying in a motel. But they did'nt use the lights, they left to door open. But it was wierd, that's the first time I saw an Amish person in life.

i live in delaware (huge amish population) and they really fucking bother me. for some reason if i walk my dog, and he shits, i have to bag it. but if some amish dude in his buggy is cruising down the shoulder of the road and his hoarse drops a load, it just lies there. the shoes on the hoarses feet tear up the roads, but they dont pay taxes (i do know that theypay something that is basically the same as a tax, but i forget what it is called. i thnk it starts with a P).

one thing that gets me every time i drive at night, is that quite a few families have hooked some underglow kits up to the bottoms of the buggies, and put a disco ball inside, alon with with fuzzy colored dice and tons of other funny crap. heh, i once seen an amish kid on a scooter (since they dont use cars too often, they turn to alternate means of transportation) and at the same time, he is smoking a cigarette. almost died laughing.
