Definitions:

Amen - Egyptian Myth. A primeval deity worshiped, esp. at Thebes, as the personification of air or breath and represented either as a ram or a goose: later identified with Amen-Ra [a god in whom Amen and Ra were combined]

amen - 1.it is so; so be it (used afer a prayer, creed, or other formal statement to express solem ratification or agreement. 2. Verily; truly,....

----

Historians now say that the first montheist was Akhenaten (formerly Amenhotep). He sought to abolish the cult of Amen-Re and other traditional gods, but that effort did not survive his death and they returned to their old ways.

Could this word be a remnant from the Egyptian influence then?

I though the Amen people say after praying just meant let it be so or something like that in Hebrew. It could be related to the Egyptian Gods but it is unlikley because I think both lauguages were spoken at the same time.

Amen just means "I believe." it had nothing to do with Amon-Ra, and this god has several spellings to account for pronounciation, so it's not necessarily "Amen-Ra."

Any correlation is speculation, to truly understand you'd have to study original texts and hieroglyphs.

i agree... i've questioned that before too. even though it's not the most likely explanation, it is a possibility... it also could be that both versions of amen share an even older linguistic root... the evolution of language is messy like that.

however, a small but persistent egyptian influence on modern culture does exist in religion, spirituality, architecture, and art.

Amen is an acronym not related to anything Egyptian.

Amen isn't an acronym.

And didn't the Hebrews spend a fair bit of time in Egypt back in the day? Language does tend to rub off after a few generations of enslavement.

Obviously, that is my thinking. How much had the Egyptian culture influenced even the Hebrews if the Egyptians are now seen as being the first monotheists.

I agree, it's definately speculative.

Do you know if amen is pronounced differently in Hebrew?

Amen is a Hebrew acronym. In Judaism, it is taught that the word Amen is an acronym for A[l] (or El), Me[lech], N[e'eman] meaning "L[ord] (or God), King, [who is] Trustworthy."

The Random House College Dictionary....

It's also written that way in my Civilization in the West textbook...

Go figure....the dictionary does include the spelling Amon in parentheses...maybe they changed the spelling once again...Who knows...

Maybe I need a new one... http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)
