Mithra was another chap who happened to be born of a virgin on December 25th. Kind of a Zoroastrian Jesus. He was very popular in the Roman Army, where he was known as Sol Invictus, or "Unconquered Sun." Constantine actually was the high priest of his cult until the day he died, when he finally converted to Christianity as something of an afterthought.

Indeed I suppose Mithra - a sun God - was a kind of forerunner of Christ (not Jesus the Nazarene). Read Rudolf Steiner on this.
