ok i live in st. louis, mo and i know how god is supposed to be banned from schools. but my school is all about god. god in the school work, god in the chorus, god everywhere. now you people may think that i am a slacker or whatever, but basically what im getting at is do i have to do school work that deals with a religion? like the puritans, would i have to do work that involved the puritans, or the buddhist, or the hindus (pretty sure i spelled the last two wrong)?

You didn't. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif) What kind of school work? Do you go to a Catholic school or something? What do your parents think?

i go to a public tech school in the city. my mom is a god freak so you can imagine her opinoin on this topic. but its not really that big of deal but i really dont want to do it. i have to do a thing on the lifestyle of the puritans. its really not that bad, but i hate that teacher and i like to be difficult to people like that. but if there is just one small loop hole that i can slip through i would love it.

God is everywhere, the xians have made it get to such a point that it's been built into our very culture. Christmas carols even have god in them, but schools make children sing it in chorus and other similar situations. (you may ask why christmas is being celebrated by people who don't believe in god and my response is: Christmas has become and american holiday rather than just a xian one) either way I see it as wrong to have it in school, but there is really no avoiding it unfortunatly.

Writing an essay on Puritans isn't necessarily religious. Religion has played a significant (read: massive) role in history, and since it's of historical importance, it can be discussed in school.

Sorry you have to write your essay.

I want to start out by stressing that i am a Christian.

That being said, i can find no reason for someone avoiding learning about any/all/some/one religion(s). At worst, you may learn something (about history, culture, origins of words and ideas, about people, etc.)

Learning is one thing that is very hard for someone to take away from you. And most learning can be beneficial, especially if you apply it in your life.

You said that you and your teacher have a bit of friction. Some of the best teachers that i've had in my life were one's that i did not see eye to eye with.

My Grandmother used to say, "make the best of all situations." And I'm saying to you, don't whine about things just for the sake of ease and laziness. My Dad used to say, "When the going gets tough, dig in".

In other words, just do the work and gain from it.

Yeah, man i think you're just trying to get out of work. The puritans were an extremely important part of history. Besides in my yankee PA schools all the teachers talked about the puritans actions (burning down the globe theater, etc) as bad things.

They weren't like "if only you children believed in Jesus as much as they did..."

Learning about religions in school is fine, as long as it's relevant, and it doesn't overstep into indoctrination.

I personally did not feel comfortable to have to deal with religion in school but learning about all types of people is one of the things school is about. You may have to write about the San Francisco earthquake and fire but that does not mean that the school, or you, are pro earthquake.

On a bumper sticker:

As long as there are exams, there will always be prayer in school
