I don't belive in god, I have'nt for about a little more than a year. Anyways, should I still celerbrate christmas? I'm 15, so I still live with my parents. Really, if you ask me, Christmas is not a religiose holiday any more. I mean, how many of you went to Church on christmas eve? Just a question I don;t really know how to answer.

I think its hipocritical to celebrate christmas if you're an atheist. You don't see me celebrating muslim holidays.

Its especially bad for atheists because its not like the are just "going with the flow" like most americans, they actively disbelieve (if that's possible).

My philosophy teacher (atheist) was on this long rant about how he lost his faith and stuff and in the middle of it i blurted out in an agitated tone: "do you celebrate christmas!?!"

He was really taken aback. And then he started saying how he appreciates Christ's philosophy and his celebration of christmas is the celebration of a great philosopher. But he doesn't celebrate Socrates' birth or Descarte's. So it sounds like bullshit to me.

awww, come on...

I get what you mean, but living in a society that is predominantly "christian", at least in traditions and culture, its sorta hard not too.

But thats really evasive and dishonest of your philosphy teacher.

He should have just come clean and admitted it, he isn't the pinnacle of unemotional inteclectualism that he might espouse to be, and is, basically, follows the herd almost as much as everyone else.

at least, thats my guess. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

Interestingly, in indonesia, fanatical muslims were trashing clubs that "dared" to serve booze during ramadan.

(just vaugely relavent)

As for the thread starter - just "celebrate" it. eat some turkey, give some gifts, and have a good time. I mean for goodness sake, it isn't THAT religious anymore in western countries.

Jesus didn't exactly say "celebrate my birth by spending all your money on gifts for your children, and tell them its from a fat bearded guy in red that lives in the icy lands far to the north".

Besides, you're likely to just be a "who cares" type athiest in a few years anyway.

Sorta like a lot of people in America and abroad.

Christmas tends to take a bite out of your wallet. And since you're 15, do you really want Christmas to swallow your wallet and piggy bank whole?

It doesn't matter, it's secularized, it should about love, kindness, and sharing. For others it's receiving gifts, or giving gifts that display kindness and sharing even if only one day out of the year.

It comes from Pagan traditions, Santa is obviously a Germanic holdover, and other symbols come from the Romans for December 25th to them was Deus Sol Invictus (Invincible Sun God), the feast of the emperor and of Sol, the sun.

Go ahead, spend time with family in the spirit of love and kindness.

I'll most likely go to church tonight even though I no longer want to associate myself with the church. I am doing it because it will make my mother happy, and during the holidays being happy and being with friends and family is what's most important. Everyone in the world is a hypocrite, so no one will condemn an atheist for partaking in christmas.

If this was Easter or another holiday like that, then I would advise you not to celebrate it, but christmas is whored out enough as it is. So I say do whatever you feel like regarding christmas.

Well, It depends what you mean by celebrating. You shouldnt go to church or participate in any Christian activity. However, very little of Christmas is actually Christian. The majority of Christmas traditons were taken from the pagan celebration of Yule. Gift exchanges, decorating a tree, hanging wreaths and mistletoe, and eating ham (or in pagan times, sacrificing a pig to Frey) are all examples of customs taken from Yule. If you ask me, these traditions can be celebrated by someone who is not a Christian.

I really dont see how it ever was any more religious (in a Christian sense) than it is now in the first place.
