Museums warned on Bible-era relics (http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/12/29/israel.antiquities.ap/index.html)

"Scholars said the forgers were exploiting the deep emotional need of Jews and Christians to find physical evidence to reinforce their faith. "This does not discredit the profession. It discredits unscrupulous dealers and collectors," said Eric Myers, an archaeology professor at Duke University in North Carolina."

If I were them, I would take a closer look as well at those famous desert scrolls discovered in mid-twentieth century - at Qumran was it ? I have often had this idea in the back of my head.

They are supposed to describe Jesus in a different light, but how convenient isn't it that this would happen in a time period when Christianity itself prophesies it will be under heavy attack. Imposture and forgery would be just two of the ways used.

At least some of the Qumran MSS are on display in Israel- most notably the pretty much complete Isaiah text they found.

I think that there is also a movement on the Net somewhere where people are trying to get the contents of the entire collection published electronically.

In fact I meant the "Dead Sea scrolls". Are they the same as those found at Qumran ?

Since the scrolls were found in 1947, I think it is a reasonable assumption that they have been thoroughly tested and whatnot.

More recently, the burial box of James was exposed as a fake.

lol.. unfortuently we can't even get a conclusive word on that yet- theres still bocu controversy over it (at least last time i heard). Which is a major pain in the arse, i'd rather know it was fake or real than go through bullshit arguments for years.

I'm actally reading this via your post from "Salvation for Dummies" topic.

First, i'd like to say: Interesting. And thanks.

Next, as our little community (mgcbtsOoyg) has demonstrated, just because someone states that something is true or BS, doesnt mean the statement is true or bs.

As to relics, i've read that if all the pieces of wood that are claimed to be fragments of the true cross were put together, there would be more than the size of the cross. All this really means is that people are not always honest. Some of the relics may be authentic or they could all be fakes.

Now, back to that article...or rather, where i went after reading that article.

I'm not sure how recent this article is, so the debate of authenticity could be over. It really wasnt too important to me when i first heard about it, a couple of years ago.. i found it "neat" but of low importance to me.

Sorry, I lost my train of thought (wife and i need to discuss this weeks budget and then spend time with her so i'll have to put Y'all on hold..

God Bless
