I know this may appear to be either trivial or coincidental, but I was wondering what you all may think of this...

The Buddah statues werent protected by anything.
Buddah is not a God.
He does not protect people.
If he saw the claims these people made, or even people who call him "lord" buddah, he would be devastated.
merely their structual integrity made them stand, not divine prescence.
Buddha said "even the body of a buddha" his changes and decays. Why not the same for statues? They're not invincible, anyone who knows anything about Buddha must at least know how he spoke about impermanence.
I think he would tell those people to shutup and meditate if he heard em http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)
This is no sign of anything in my opinion...

There is a big bronze buddha some where that has suvived a tsunami or two, mostly becasue it is very heavy. Buddha is also a somewhat more hydro-dynamic shape than houses and stuff so the water would not excert as much force on it.
I beleive buddha said something to the effect of life can suck, though he said it by telling someone to beg some kind of seeds from a home that has know no loss. After saying stuff like that it does not make sence that hed would save people who believe the same things he did even if he could.

Those people just have extreme faith, catalyzed by extreme circumstances.
However, I wouldn't question their understanding or faith of the Buddha.
They probably know it 10 times better than you guys.

They certainly weren't protected against Taliban dynamite.
^Yeah, that really pissed me off there. Fucking bastards destroying relics. Whether it's their religion or not, they still had historical significance.
There are two kinds of Buddhism.
Buddhism the way that Buddah taught it
(Buddah is not a god, individual monkhood stuff)
Then there are people who worship Buddah as a God (The people who think that Buddah statues were saved because they were protected).
THe two types are on completley differnt ball parks.
These people are of the latter, therefore it is perfectly understanable for one of us to have a better picture of the core, Theravayda Buddhist teachings.

I know which story you're referring to. A woman whose child has died comes to visit the Buddha. "Can you return my child to me?", she says with the dead child in her arms. "Yes", replies the Buddha, "but only if you collect ten poppy seeds from a house that death has never entered."
The woman became enlightened, buried her child and became a nun.

I believe that if enough people believe in something the collective conciousness can create it in a certain sense.
So, may be enough people believing that the statues were holy/powerfull/divine/etc... made them that way.

As for the water not exerting as much force, that's not true, the water exerts the same amount of force, it's just that because of both the texture of the statue and the contour of its shape, the water's force had less effect on it. (less friction)
That's the only explanation I agree with, though.
