The fat Buddah is a metaphor.

Physically he is thin and emaciated, but inside he feels like a happy fat man, because he has the power of the mind.

Cheers,

Bingo, Buddha is portrayed in a variety of ways, depending on his mood. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

In reality, by the time of his death, he probably looked most like the Thai and Cambodian portrayals.

It's a very famous pose that most non-buddhists don't even know is his death pose. The one where he is laying on his side with an arm propping up his head with a big, fat smile on.

He would have been a normal sized guy by the end of it, not fat, not thin. Thus was the middle path.

he had a vagenus.

Before becoming enlightened under the Bodhi tree Buddha or "Siddartha" at the time was actually a wandering hindu ascetic. He was often described as a "Skeleton".

Ascetics deprive themselves of basic neccessities (like spelling). They teeter on the edge of death, bringing upon themselves great suffering.

Buddha was actually deathly skinny in the begginning of his search, I do beleive that he was never ever fat. That is just the Americanized version, and America is fat, so of course we'd warp him in thay way. Plus, fat people are usually jolly (Fat Albert, Santa) so it all makes sense. Jolly Fay Buddha.

This is the truth on the "fat Buddha." http://www.holymtn.com/gods/hotei.htm

Yea, wasn't he a relatively insignificant god of the kitchen?

the buddha was fat because in his travels he was offered food everywhere he went, and he was unable to turn it down in fear of harming their feelings. He is believed to have died due to complications from his obesity, maybe a heart attack?

This thread just proves that no one has the exact story.

I find Buddhism confusing for this very reason.

I tried to study it, but the many variations (and the diversity within those stories) made it impossible to FULLY grasp the entire concept.

But maybe that's just me.

*shrugs*

I believe the "fat" type is particularly the Chinese style of representing Buddha. It may have something to do with their particular way of thinking.

Maybe not only China. Maybe south-eastern Asia, Thai, Cambodgians, etc. included.

I don't recall ever having seen a depiction of a "fat" Buddha statue in India.

Yes, there is a huge statue like that somewhere. I have seen pictures of it several times.

I think the reason he is represented as 'fat' is because the abdomen(tan tien) is where chi is stored, and hence the large belly is a symbol for an abundance of chi.

The big ear lobes symbolise wisdom.

buddha wasn't teaching others about self-discipline. that's what military leaders are for... buddha's teachings were only about being mindful. to someone who is not mindful, it would certainly appear to be a message of discipline. however, to those who are overly mindful, the buddha is not a teacher at all, but a great friend. to those who are perfectly mindful, the buddha is

That's not even buddha, its one of the bodhisattvas that's depicted as a fat man.

I'm pretty fucking shocked at the level of random story-making in this thread.

It seriously seems like half of you are pulling this shit from your ass. Only about 5 people in here are halfway correct.

In case you haven't noticed, full mindfulness requires discipline. Most people walk around like zombies, completely driven by zombie behavior. In fact, even to say that 'they think' is an inadequate statement, because they rarely have the ability to control what they think. Rather, it should be more appropriate to say, 'it is thought in them,' or 'thinking occurs in them.'

well, i would have noticed it if you hadn't spelled it out for me... now, instead of controlling my thoughts, and thereby realizing the necessity of this discipline in achieving full-mindedness, i just read your post and the thinking occurred in me.

great, thanks.

The Buddha is.

Eil's statement was.

no this is how the west depicts buddha, a laughing overweight man

however, in actuality, he believed in fasting, and not at all in overindulgence. i agree that he was emancipated. you can read the dhammapada verses they're dope

Clearly, you've exercised a tremendous understanding of the true Buddhist mindset and their clear tendencies to increase their self-esteem... what with the lack of a belief in the self to begin with.
