ok, im a christian, but even if i wasnt, id sure think some of you (emphasis on some) are just small minded idiots - you see the christian religion, its big, why not vent your lifes problems on it?
C'mon - im not saying dont "debate" or look into the meanings of things, and hey if it floats your boat, question gods existence - but at least do it with some intelligence, and not just stupid "im an atheist, god cant exist because i have a pothetic life and hed make it all soft and cushy for me..." or more precisely aimed at christians "look at those bible bashers reading out in the street..." - id actually aggree that most of these guys are really annoying, but still cut the rest of us some slack?
never. all those who are under the xtian god, deserve absolutely no mercy... at all.
I for one am proud to say that I'm not a "pissed off teenager hating God".
I actually provide legible and legitamate agrumenents against Christianity. Yes, there are some "Bible Bashers" on here, but most of us are theologicaly advanced enough to get past that, and talk like real Theologians.
For me, the Bible has a lot of flaws, so I do speak against it, but always in a mature and thought provoking way.
Er.....yeah.

I don't have a problem with someone who wants be christian, jew, muslim or believe in any other religions. I do have a problem when those same people feel they have to force it on everyone else.

I assure you. No one here speaks like a thelogian. A McDowellian apologist, maybe, but theologians? I think not.

Definition of "forcing"?
What you think of "forcing", others may think of "sharing".

Why, because you haven't allowed yourself to experience the mercy of God ?
I think you have been kicked too many times, and can't take a breath of fresh air to save your own life.
Breath, damnit !

I think, as a general rule, that those who feel that Christians "force" their beliefs on others are ignorant (NOT stupid).
Why ?
Because everyone represents what they believe, not just Christians, and not just regarding religious preference.
Shall we just all sit around and say nothing, not looking out for our fellow man, whom we hope will be saved from their sin, and join us in Heaven ?
What could I hope to gain from that, other than loving man the way God has commanded me to ?
If I don't recommend '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee's, I am doing my brother's an injustice, because it is a damn good vehicle, and I love mine.
I know that is a barbaric example of what I am talking about, but in its simplicity I hope I adequately convey my point.
If you feel "forced", then I believe you either have a guilty conscience, or a persecution complex.
I am not saying that NO Christian has ever tried to force their religion down anyone's throat (look at Calvinism, for a good example), but on the whole, I have not seen a lot of that going on...especially not in the past 100 years.

Thank you very much, Napoleon. That was an excellent point.
I think those that feel "forced", as I said earlier, have a guilty conscience, and therefore apply negative connotations to this "sharing" you are talking about.
I have never intentionally "forced" anyone to listen to my beliefs about God.
I have talked about it, and depending upon the level of comfort I perceive, I can tell the level of conviction that is actually taking place.
I have found that those that are the most angry are the closest to believing...
We don't get angry about what we don't care about.

The last Indian residential schools closed in the seventies. That was government sponcered throat shoving.

Python...I'll have to look into that, unless you can provide some sources of your own.
Having exact titles and such would be helpful in my search. Shooting in the dark often misses the target. *lol*
I'll admit I am a little ignorant on this topic.
Time to learn !
Thanks in advance.

I have met people in thier fourties and ealy fifties who were in residential schools. My grandfather and great aunt were placed in one.
Edid: a Canadian link and an American link. Most of the Canadian school were run by the Catholic Church.

I dont belive in god and belive chirstianity is quite evil on a whole and i have never been kicked in the sense you mean. i have a loving mum and a great dad and brother. But from the first time i went to church, when i as about 6, i had to go to sunday school and the first storie about god i heard was when jesus walked on water. And the first thing i said was, How?
And since then i have not belived in god and dont think i ever shall.
So to severence i dont have a pathetic life i dont think god would make my life better and i try not to sound like a moron. Even if try is the main word there.

The thing is, at least for those of us that live the US, we've heard it all before.
Hmm, to give an analogy, you know that cell phone commercial with that frickin' guy always saying, "Can you hear me now? Good!" I've heard that company's message ad nauseam, but they keep making commercials like it anyway because they think it's worth sharing. However, I don't even want a cell phone, so those commercials amount to nothing more than annoying repetition. Get it?
Repetition of the same general idea is not going to convince me of anything.
And by the way, Digi, because those commercials annoy me so badly, does that mean I'm any closer to buying a cell phone? No, it just means I'm sick of hearing it.

Has it not occured to you that Christians have been too passive about their religion, and they are not going to take the blatant misrepresentation and abuse that we receive on the TV anymore ? That it is time to stop allowing ONLY evolution to be taught to our children in schools ? That we cannot allow longstanding representations of our faith to be torn down and spit upon (ex: depiction of Ten Commandments in court, in school, and in government) ? This is what we believe in, and this is what our country was founded on. We have made every effort to tolerate other religions, beliefs, and "feelings". That is how we have come to be afflicted with the apathy that has forced us to fall silent. I think our voices are coming back to us...
Our beliefs and values have been ridiculed and stripped of their validity methodically over the past several decades. I can speak for myself, and the other Christians that I know, when I say that we are simply sick of it.
True 'dat. Fuckin' heathens.

The framers of the consitution dileberately put in seperation of church and state. Bush is trying for the exact oppisite with the "faith-based initiatives" and such. As a christian myself, I don't try to shove my religion down anyones throat. We're/your not going to convert the whole world, so stop trying.

im an atheist because i cant see the existence of a god. i dislike christianity and all other organized religions except buddhism, because they try to force their beliefs on another group. this religious self-righteousness has led to many wars/crusades. im not an ignorant bible basher, i have reasons for being an atheist.

ugh.. its times like this im envious of Catholics and Anglicans.... your average protestant (obviously not including the C of E) would probably never hear of people like Bultmann and Schweitzer... let alone read their work.
