Is it actually written anywhere or is it just taken as given. But what I don't get if Buddha was meant to be so fat and happy, why are all the buddist monks skinny and serious, and you never see them tokin weed?

Well you've got the Dali Llama but thats about it.

Somebody asks this question nearly every two weeks.

Okay. The Buddah is skinny and emaciated, but because he has the power of the mind, he feels like he's fat and happy.

Cheers,

Lost

Buddhism doesn't condone intoxication, so weed smoking might be off the list.

Although, in my youth, I did enjoy a nice bowl of Buddha. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

I assume that Buddha was skinny in real life, because before he achieved Nirvana, he attempted numerous methods of inflicting self-suffering, such as starvation, plucking all of one's body hair out, ect...I never thought of equating the "fat and happy" piece with it, but it does make sense. In that time, "fat" people were generally well-off people, so they did not have to worry about monetary issues and such.

Don't worry about it. There is no Buddha.

exactly before buddha became enlightened he's went on this fast, he went so long that he was only skin and bones. then he reached enlightenment and he was like "hey Im kind of hungry, so he ate and ate and ate until he was super fat. he lost the weight eventually but the statue of the happy buddha is just a tatue of him after reaching enlightenment.

No, whiteboy. It's symbolic, like Lost said. Obesity then was viewed as a sign of wealth and happiness. It is meant to show that even though Buddha is of normal weight, due to Enlightenment, it is as though he is "fat"; spiritually wealthy and always happy and kind. Like Santa Claus.

And, as a side note, Buddha did not condone obesity or starvation. He saw ther esult of both as only the same end of their two paths. Instead, he urged his follwers to eat jsut enough to keep the body well-nourished and energetic, but not to the point of excess. He mad hated excess.

Every person is said to have a buddha mind, except most are'nt aware of it and don't use it. The level of awareness required is constant vigilance, training the mind to be in the moment, focused on the now -- mindfulness. Whatever interferes with that is not helpful. What does the 'bud' do for you? Anecdotal experience says that for some, the experience of being 'now' is heightened by the bud.

Is bud an intoxicant? The etymology of the word refers to some'thing', within which, there is a toxin. Are there toxins in bud?

Early morning meditation and wake-and-bake is a good combination. Try it.

Buddha was not skinny and emaciated at death. He wasn't skinny and emaciated when enlightened either. The whole point of enlightenment was middle path. He was a normal looking guy by death.

Period.

If you understand the answer clearly,

There was no Buddha before you

And there is no Buddha to come.

After teh buddha discovered the use of marijuana for recreational purposes it was nick named in his honor, Bud. he was skinny at first, but because of the munchies he ate he became the fatass you all see today whenever you go into chinatown.

If its not in the first 9 pages, its fair game. There's one about buddha being fat, but Im asking if he used to toke chronic. It all fits really, "enlightenment" yeah, thats it, you keep thinking that.

Tribe, I was talking to Mephisto's idiot drug references.

Smooth reaction, BTW, but I think the old Prince would agree with that quote.

What's your IM name? I'd enjoy a conversation with you.
