I think god was made up a long time ago, to make people behave.
If there wasnt a "god" People would go nuts because they would know that there would be nothing bad because of it.
I think that churches are just part of the act.
Discuss.

wow i've never heard anyone make a point like that (to the original poster)
but theres not way to prove God or any other higher power doesn't exist either
i like religion because feeling spiritual and connecting force to other people, going into the woods... sitting, listening.. the beauty of existing... how awesome it is to just be...

This may or may not prove to you god doesn't exist; however, it's an interesting idea. If god created all then I must ask what created god. Of course this reply could go on forever. If something created god then what created something etc... Obviously an end (or starting point if you will) could never be established. You would eventually get to the point of something (creator) has just always been here. To which I might add: If it is conceivable that something (god) has always just been here and created earth and universe then it is logical that earth and universe where just here without god.

God was "made up to make people behave"? But...that's sort of...totally against the philosophy presented in the Bible. I mean, I'm assuming you're talking about the Christian God. The way it is, God knows we are imperfect. He knows we sin; He knows it's our nature. When Jesus saw hookers, he wasn't all like, "Bitch! You goin' ta hell!" he was merciful, understanding, etc.
The church has manipulated the philosophy of God to try to gain power. But that doesn't mean God doesn't exist, nor is God to blame. And as far as people going nuts had there never been a God? Humankind wouldn't have lasted long. People are inherently greedy, inherently self destructive. Morallity is selflessness. If it weren't for the selflessness of humans we would all kill ourselves and each other; if it weren't for the greed of humans, we would be perfect.

I was in an abusive marriage...blah blah....
Days lasted forever.....and ever.
The lady across the fence talked to me about God (Christian) and bought me a Bible with my name on it. I have witnessed her do things that make me cringe....and cringe again.
It is so hard to help you understand unless you have experienced it.
Until then you run your mouth and look like a fool.

Did you mean Atheist?
Seems to me that the human mind just can't grasp the concept of eternity. God must love the unknown http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)

All you christians don't respect our points of view, and can't believe the fact that there is no proof that god is real. Even if we proved it wasn't real, then you would still believe in it. Sad how stubborn some people are.

I believe in a god or gods. I have trouble believing that we are here for no reason. However, I do not agree with a majority of the major religons. They are more concerned with controlling you rather then comforting you.

I really don't think people would go crazy. I mean, there are other things to put your faith in other than god.

Plus we've had this thing called "law" for the last few thousand years - retribution is an effective containment measure.

one cannotanswer that question, one shouldnt even waste time thinking on it because God isnt going to reveal His prigin, except to say that He has always existed. If you subscribe to the theory that there are an infinite number of universes the notion of His always existing doesnt seem too hard to realize.
