Valid question that I dont know the answer to.

He has a board meeting with God, who in turn tells him secrets about humanity and sometimes the universe. At the last one, God probably told him something along the lines of "Your people are dying, the only thing to save them now is..." and the truth was so shocking that the Pope couldn't take it. He didn't want to wait around for the result, so he asked God for his mercy and the ol' bastard got struck down. The people are damned, and the Pope is dead...it's up to YOU to decide what happens next...

He's a figure head thats all.

Pretty powerful person. The pope is the Vicar of Christ for the Roman Catholic faith - over 1 billion followers.

He is pretty much a figure head, but there is an immense responsibility to this one person to be perfect in the spiritualistic sense of the word.

Their life has been devoted to religion, and to become the pope means that the world and the College of Cardinals (The "princes" of the Roman Catholic Church) thinks very highly of them.

I'm interested to see who the next pope is. (Might be a Canadian, eh?)
