More than half of all child abuse in the US cases come from religious homes. Why do you think that is?

EDIT: TOPIC *Religious

Well, there's the possibility that the statistic has been misused, such as not taking into consideration the ratio of religious to non-religious families. But, assuming that it means that a religious family has a higher probability of having child abuse...

I'd have to guess it's either because religious families are more poverty stricken (not sure about that) and therefore would be more likely to have family troubles, or perhaps because the parents feel they are justified in their actions by their religion. There are quite a few verses in the Old Testament that support strong measures for disciplining children, even going as far as having them stoned (http://www.thebricktestament.com/the_law/when_to_stone_your_children/dt21_18a.html).

Proverbs 22:15 --

"Folly is deep-rooted in the heart of a boy;

a good beating will drive it right out of him." (NEB)

This is sort of a screwy question because more than half of the world is religious so it would make sense that more than half of the child abuse would be done by religious people, just because of the numbers... I don't think that statistic really proves very much.

It speaks well of religious families.

Most of the US is religious...

but only half of the abuse cases come from religious homes?

Most people who are "religious" only claim to be out of obligation to the American Perfection.

The question isn't religion, it's how you define abuse.

I'll bet those pansy-ass liberals define abuse as spanking your child more than once a month, or raising your voice at them when they break you expensive china.

Pussies.
