According to his brother Mark Nichols, B. Nichols regularly attended church, therefore conditioned to respond to the Bible.(Source; wikipedia)

After she was taken hostage Mrs Smith proceeded, with considerable presence of mind, to form a rapport with Nichols.

Dillusional and irrational. Basically the mans reality was collapsing around him. He'd just killed 3 people in cold blood and was being hunted down, knowing that death row was probably going to be his next destination. After having formed a rapport with Nichols is it so suprising that he wouldn't mentally latch unto a safe and familiar(conditioned) territory - christian literature telling him that God loves him and that if he stops the violence there's still hope for him - and then respond accordingly?

I think pyschology, rather than God, was at work here.

As for the woman herself she emotionally manipulated Nichols in order to survive, a natural and, luckily for her, in this case a very effective technique. I suppose she was brave but it's difficult to apply strict definitions. If you want to survive you do whatever you think is nessecary at the time.

P.S. If this scenario had involved a non-christian who then shot Smith after hearing the same quoted passages, would you have posted a thread saying "Failed by the Grace of God?" ??
