The word deribes from the Goths... Which where a barbarian tribe... In what is now Germany I beleive.. And if one of them met a new age goth... Let's just say it wouldn't be pretty for the newager.

The Gothic period (aprox. 1100-1200) occured in between the romanesque and early renaissance.

It was associated mainly with the complex style of cathedral architecture and the use of windows (often stained glass) to fill rooms with light and create the presence of god. It was also associated with the emergence of scholastic (scholarly) text.

I think it was probably called 'gothic', because alot of what was left of the holy Roman empire by then was Germanic or Visigoth. I'm not sure about that though.

Anyway modern goths today have nothing to with the gothic period. In my opinion they have more of a victorian influence. Haha, victorian.

Goth is just a gimmick. That's all it is. It's people getting rich off of idiots who think they're original, independent, and intelligent. And it's a good marketing device.
