View Full Version : Have you changed your beliefs since Totse?

Just a question. Feeling curious. Cuz I've noticed that nearly every one bitches at each other all the time, and from what I've seen no one has actually come out on totse and said that they've changed religion.

Before someone responds with a yes, i just want to point out that really dont want to know if someone has changed (especially, if they have become a Christian due to time spent here in TOTSE).

Although it is my prayer that everyone is saved, i dont want my human nature to cause me to get the "big head disease"... i'm not saying that i have or have not, effect on anyone, i'm saying that i dont want to give myself credit when any and all credit goes to God.

Since joining Totse in 2001 my beliefs have changed. I believe that orthodox Judaism is the truth. But I think I came to that conclusion by studying on my own rather than through reading posts here on Totse.

I've only recently begun to read/post in My God.

I can say without a doubt that my understanding of other religions has increaced since then, also my respect for them has as well.

More specifically, though I do enjoy arguing with DigitalSavior, I must admit he/she has opened my eyes to the point of view.

I may not agree with it, but I now see where it comes from a bit more clearly.

In the same vein, Rust's arguements in favor of evolution have been helpful in providing me with more research about a topic I enjoy studying.

I know quite a large amount about Evolution, but Rust's posts express the thoughts very well and are always an enjoyable read.

My understanding of many religions must have increased 10 fold. Not mainly because of the posts but because they hit me with the spark of curiosity to read up on them.

I'm still an atheist though. Just have a better understanding of world theism.

( mostly Christianity because that's all we fucking discuss )

I agree with Val, Rust and Digital both know their shit.

Val and Paradise - Thanks. That is all I can hope for...insight on an otherwise grossly misrepresented and misunderstood faith.

And ditto to Xtreem: glory be to God, and God alone.

-----------------------------------------

To answer the original poster's question, my faith has not changed as far as turning from my original beliefs to another.

It has grown much stronger, and I have the atheist's to thank for that.

They certainly give me a run for my money, and FORCE me to know my faith better than I could have ever hoped to on my own.

I have also met some Jews on here, and I have learned a great deal from them in my short time here.

Overall, Totse has helped develop me into the Christian I was hoping to be.

You've got to realize I've been at totse (under various names) since '99. I'm 22 now, so obviously my beliefs have changed.

That isn't because of totse directly, however totse has made me more interested and inspired to search on my own.

Heh, thats all I want of any Christian. It may not be for me, but the thing that really infuriates me about Christians is when they don't know their shit. I've tried to get my sister to read your posts a number of times.

Poster question: I guess you could say I have. At least, totse is where I got the links to Libertarianism and Asatru info.

I have. Not really because of TOTSE though.

Why ? To show her how she is wrong in her faith, by using me as an example ?

Or to help her educate herself about her own faith ?

I was always a borderline agnostic. Now I'm more close to the feeling that we are all part of something big, and that thing for all intents and purposes might as well be called god, wether it functions on any level we can understand (which most likely isn't the case). I also feel a need to develop a spiritual connection as well as a sense of awe and humility to this power.

Edit: I've also realized that arguments against a evolution and an ancient earth are silly. I've asked almost the whole science department at my uni about this, and compared theyre awnsers to articles on creationism (where the authors have dubious credentials and diploma's), and it just reafirms my previous opinion. Evolution is not a crazy conept, it's a very simple concept with (obviously) complex results that occur over huge spans of time. People who argue against it always seem to grossly oversimplify the process, which makes me sceptical of how wide their willing to open their mind.

Those links prove religious people suck at science. I'm not sure whether that was your intention or not, but make sure you visit the kitchen on the way out. It's the only place your religion would want you.

Since you provided a wealth of information to refute the links I gave, I will hold your opinion of them INVALID.

But thanks for playing. *smiles*

Logic and insight is a commodity you do not possess. Such are the side effects of ignorance, stupidity and whoredom.

It's not like anyone can't find an article on the Internet which completely contradicts some other article. I don't read articles, I write them. People don't understand because they're idiots.

I have some pretty hardcore Christian friends who are scientists. They don't believe the bible is to be read literally.

Maybe it's an education thing..

Digi seems to be one of the most warped people I've ever met (well, talked to).

Oh I know that, I used to live in the South! I was too young for them to bother me, though.

Still, though, she's considerably warped. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

I can't in good conscience attempt to destroy the faith my sister uses as a crutch for emotional/family problems. It's how she deals with shit, and I'm not going to be able to convince her otherwise. But she could at least have a faith that wil hold up to the most accomodating and casual scrutiny. At least your worldview is internally consistant.

Nevermind. That's just gas.

Wait, no. It's the thread.

I have abandoned Lutheranism (the religion of my father's family) in favour of Judaism (the religion of my mother's family) during my time on totse. It was completely unrelated to my experiences on the site, though a few people on totse have made me more comfortable with the shift.

EDIT: I initially posted the refutation here. But given that a few people have expressed their approval of the thread, I don't want to de-rail it any further.

Therefore, I have made a new topic in Mad Scientists, since the refutations would deal with Science.

Anyone willing to defend these links, should visit the topic:

----

To answer the original question: not really.

Though when I first started posting here I usually took the Christian side, Dark_Magneto among other of the more older users might remember, I didn't believe in what I was arguing; it was me playing devil's advocate.

I've been a materialist long before totse.

TOTSE didn't convert me to atheism, but Buddhist websites did. TOTSE does help me make better arguments against Christianity, though. Especially helpful when I want to piss people off who live in the most Christian town in the midwestern US. (Wheaton)

Wait, if the Bible isn't meant to be taken literally, isn't God not meant to be taken literally (as the Bible is the word of God)?
