Who was/were "Babylon the Great Whore" ?

(again, apologies if i've posted this before..old age..)

and points will be deducted for any evangelical nonsense about it being the USA, UK, EU,Russia, catholic church or the free masons.

Babylon, although it used to be a center of learning and science etc. you get the picture, had degenerated into a decadent place filled with corrupt politicians ( well, kings ) and prostitutes ("whore", it was considered a disgrace to be a prostitute in those times ). Thus Babylon was referred to as the great whore, a place which god despised... I don't know what happened to it though, it probably got destroyed...

^^^not the answer i was looking for but yes it did get destroyed and remained so until recently when saddam started rebuilding it.

I have some extra time on my hands, so I'll try to give a real answer within the next day or so.

I'm not certain about the identity but I think it's naive to attribute it to a real person or a group of people. I would say the Whore represents a mortal sin, probably greed or something related with power/authority [all the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her].

I remember reading this somewhere...

Could it be Judah/Israel with the exception of the so called 'remnant' who remain true and unadulterated by 'her'...?

As a place then...would it be Jerusalem?

There are so many opinions on this...

Why don't you offer some verses for hints...

Babylon was in Revelations, she was riding atop a griffin i think...i forget, but she was being looked down upon from heaven and she was drinking water? she represented the holy city or something...why?

I'd probably go with Jerusalem, too.

The problem with it is that you can interpret it in many different ways. That's why so many people say the RCC or USA, etc.

The beast would be the Roman Empire. Babylon is Rome. And I've heard a couple different things about the whore of Babylon... either it's a whore named Babylon (which is how Asimov interprets it), or she represents an emperor of Rome or the power of Rome.

"the prostitute sits" implies a position of authority that influences people all over the world.

Spiritual unfaithfulness.

I've finished my research on it, and I'm fairly confident that the whore of Babylon stands for the city of Rome.

But do go ahead and explain what you mean by the usage of "whore" in the Old Testament.

Even with the usage of Whore in the OT in mind, it can mean a variety of ideals, peoples, general areas of the world, or specific nations. Who cares about Revelations anyways...it was obviously written during a trip.

But what that first guy said sounded pretty realistic, i'll go with the city being decadent.

That's a good one. Christianity today fits very well the role of the Babylon Whore.

Thats a really REALLY broad ended question. There are hundreds of answeres, for instance rome-"whore of babylon" could be a refrence to the temple prostitutes, general immorality in Babylon etc etc etc.

i think ive got it, all people who have blind faith towards a non-extisant being,(religous people), they drape through life wondering about the 'after-life' only to realise when they die there isnt one. thats my definition of screwing over.

How do you realize when you die that there isn't an after-life if you're not experiencing an after-life?

OH OH I know My girlfriends mom told me.

It is organized religon in general.

Its people who use religon to profit, EG: evangalists, those people who come to your door, people who want money to supourt a church.

People who sell religon out. Bush is going to hell.

EDIT AGAIN. The great whore of babylon, is the coruptness that stems from babylon. OF implys that the great whore has spread. That is why people think its organized religon, and all the coruptness of religon that has spread, mostly the catholic church represent the whore of babylon.
