Is it okay to murder people?

I've been thinking about this lately after I saw a piece on the Onion about Pat Robertson. If the bible says thou shall not kill in the ten commandments isn't that the end of the discussion? The reason I ask is because I don't think Robertson is alone in thinking he can murder whoever he wants. I'm sure the people who watch his show believe the same. What does this say about christians as a peaceful people?

That's not really a great Christian theological question. The Ten Commandments say not to, not to mention the number of times it's implied otherwise.

Pat Robertson is a fucking idiot.

According to Christian teachings, the only time killing is justified is if its in self-defense or during a justified war. Pat Robertson however, is a fucking idiot so I'm not really sure why he thinks assassinating Hugo Chavez would be justifiable.

Maybe these people don't represent real Christians?

That and killing another is only righteous when engaged in self defense that would otherwise kill you (turn the other cheek?), justified war, and when a person has killed another person.

In the final instance, it is not a person to person crime, it is a government on person crime. The government has declared that it has justification to kill those who have shed the blood of the innocent willingly. Manslaughter in the Bible wasnt considered a felonious crime. The family could avenge the death unless the man made it to a "city of refuge".

for the turn the other cheek argument, i cant think of any instances where permanent bodilly harm or certain death was placed on anyone in the Bible. Jesus said if someone were to hit you, turn the ther cheek. Dont offer resistance to a slap. What is a slap more than a physically damaging strike? No comparison.

If a man comes up to you with a gun and is aiming for you, death very likely if you dont act. If you shoot him and kill him, self defense. No harm done.

I am not christian and even I realize Pat Robertson is a retard and most christians probably not would pray for people to die or say we should assasinate someone cause its cheaper than war.

I think the problem may stem from translation... my understanding is that the original writing translates more correctly to "Thou shalt not murder," rather than kill, implying that you should not kill unjustifiably.

I think that true christian values have been so tainted by the church that if jesus was alive he'd cry like a native american in a garbage tip.
