View Full Version : Are religious pursuits self centered?

Isn't the reason people take up a faith is to reap the benefits of it? Even if the faith is all about being compassionate, and becoming a selfless person isn't the main draw of any religion to be a happy, enlightened, and removed from suffering? That would really trivialize faiths as ways of just coping with life. Like just because maybe a religion is a full proof way of acheiving satisfaction, does that mean it works and is correct, that one should just settle with it to be happy?

What would you say of Muslim or Hindi women, or Christian gays?

Well I don't know much about the Muslim or Hindu religions, but I do know that Muslim beliefs impose strict standards on women. But isn't the reason for them to live like this is to go to a type of heaven when they die? The reason they put up with(or are forced into) a very submissive temperment is to reap the rewards of a positive after life. Now I'm not exactly sure about this.

As for Christain gays, the reason they follow Jesus is so they go to heaven. It just seems self motivated.

Also women from the strict Muslim backgrounds where they're oppressed have pretty much only one option.

I'd say most Christian gays are probably quite progressive, again, those that aren't are probably indoctorinated rather than religious through a less biased choice, and therefore they find themselves in turmoil.
